The P.E.f. Arts and Crgft; Guild has taken the first step lcwlrd raising money for an art centre lad museum in Charlotte- wwq by askinx its members to consider ways of raising funds for this purpose, and also by initial. lng the practice of making a small fihlfse for all its children's and adult classes. Up to this llme "My have been offered free. The charge is being made small enough that it should discour- age no one from attending the classes, and indeed is so small that it can't possibly amount to very much of the total needed, according to Miss Frances Johnston, the Guild‘: director. She does feel, however, that it. is one way to have a large number of per- sons contributing toward an ar‘: centre and museum, and should encourage more people to become actively interested in the project. An act incorporating the Prince Edward Island Arm and Crafts Guild was passed in the Legisla- ture early this spring and not many persons know that among the purposes which appear in the Guild‘: constitution is one which slates that the Guild plans to col- lect and preserve the objects and records exemplifying and pertain- ing to the culture and history of the people of Princc Edward ls- land. The Guild. however. can- not establish ‘its museum activi- ties until it has the facilities for doing so. Its Art Centre program oi child- ren's classes. adult classes, art ex- hibitions, film shoivings and re- corded concerts has been present- ed in two rooms in the liiarkct Building which are shared with the I.O.D.E. Though it has been operating for only a little more than a year and a half, some 400 gatherings for children and adults have been held in the Art Centre. and a total of over 10.000 people has participated in its program. This is a remarkable achievement. and the Guilds executive believe that it clearly illustrates the in- terest and need for a proper place to house its activities. Sees Removal 0i Land Tax As Beneficial A pleased visitor over the week- end was Mr. Charles Compton. president of the Ottawa Property Owners’ Association, who is mak- ing his first visit to the Maritimes and is particularly impressed ivithv the evidence of agricultural pro- gress in this Island. L Mr. Compton said he was very pleased to learn that the land tax throughout the rural areas of the Province has been removed. “I think that is one of the greatest forward steps in thehisiory 9f this country, because it will pro- mote individiisl enterprise in your basic industry". he added.
