> JOCK mx We are all familiar with the old line,"Hope springs eternal in the human bre- ast" and we wonder if the poet might not have added "As well as in the minds of all U.P.E.I. fans"... every Fall we hope that THIS year we'll attract athletic types from P.E.I.’{ and all over who will _ carry the Panther name to national prominence. Sometimes ithappens but, as with all'colleges our size, the odds are against us and perhaps that is why, when we do get some glory it is doubly sweet. Just before registration we wended>our way over the criss—cross of the‘ campus (avoiding the lawns) and asked Athletic Dir- ector’Hilton what he thought of our prospects. He gave us definite HOPE that this SHOUID be the year. We might hasten to add, however, that he ab- solutely refused to di- vulge any names until classes begin... anyone familiar with col— * lege athletic politics in these Maritimes will have no difficulty in unr derstanding his obvious reluctance. We'll skim over what he told us and hope it is informative... please mix with a bit of enthusiasm and a maximum of optimism. ' I 7' Football Coach Hilton” '(Last year's #1 Man in ‘Canada) thinks prospects are good. At home games will be Dal. on Sept.21, U.N.B. on Oct. 5,\and St. V ‘sxcn'm‘c FOOTBALL ACTION M LAST YEAR \‘e F.X. on Nov. 2. We'll be~ away at Mount A. on Sept. 28, at Acadia on Oct. 19 and at S.M.U. on Oct. 27. We will use that optimism and pass along the inf- ormation that the first two teams will playoff at the home of the winner on November 9 and wonder how we can accommodate the large crowd expected at MacAdam Field. For those who, we hope, will be interested in the bus trips to football games\ *that the Student Union arranges, we'd~like to explain the charge struc— ture. Hosted by Vera Cam- pbell, the best and most entertaining bus driver this side of the River Styx, these trips are really a lot of fun. Un- fortunately they do‘notw ceme for nothing and one planned for the U.N.B. game of the 15th was can— 'ce11ed because of a lack of interest and some ‘ criticism has been Voiced about the expense so we'll usgive the basis. The buses are rented from the Sch- ool Board-for .35¢ a mile and $2.65 per hour for the bus driver and for her meals. (Vera has always _ limited her eating to one meal only!). We are basing 'igthese charges on those charged in the 1973 trip. 414 miles @ .35 ‘$144.90 17% hrs @ $2.65 I plus 1 meal 48.59‘ Ferry 41 x $1.30 53.30 Ferry Bus 10.00 2 Campus Policemen 40.00 ‘ $296.79 ».,1w.,\ , . .‘.I I .r '3" ‘ MICKEY PLHCE' b There are 40 seats on a bus and a driver.formthe 41 total: Campus Police take two seats so the charge has to be split among 38...this would in- dicate a charge of $7.81 to each...so the $7.50 appears to be a bargain! Hockey Jack Kane returns as Coach after a leave- of-absence of a couple of years. He'll have a hard time replacing sev- eral Of last year's play- ers who have moved on but, with the players remain- ing and a host of new re— cruits he expects to be "In there". Anyone who saw - the Junior playoffs last year will know that there is no lack of real players available locally. He'll also have several players from that part of Canada on the other side of 'Tormentine which is, on the Island, usually re- ferred to depricatingly as "Away". This year the set up is a bit different with all teams, except Memorial, playing home- and-home games with each other. Top four will ,. qualify for the playoffs which will be at the home rink of the #1 team. Last year Jock Talk startedeoff advocating a move of some .games to more commodious quarters but, after the adverse reaction we are not going to mention it again. At any rate WE have the only comfortable seat in the iceboxll First we play host toVMemorial in the only two games PHOTO BY GORDON prsaca ,. I, ‘ Tar dADRE, TUES., SEPT. 17, 1974 Page 9 league games will be here on November l6 &17 when scheduled between us for the season. Basketball Likeable Dave Smith, Coach for the past two years has left us to pursue a doctoral degree. His place will be taken by Gary Heald who, as coach of the Camden-Rock- port High School team comes to us with a hot record of 132725. In addition to the several holdovers from last year .we expect several outside players including some South-of-the—Border ones who, We suspect, are att- racted by Gary Heald's name. The league will be divided into two divisions with the four N.S. teams in one section and U.P.E. I. in with Mount AllisOn, l U.N.B., Memorial as well as Saint Thomas and Mon- cton on a reduced basis. The two top teams in each section will qualify for the playoffs which will be held at the Gym. of the winning N.S. team and WE WILL BE THERE. Soccer This game has never achieved the popularity of other sports at U.P.E. I. but we think that it is finally-gaining recog— nition as a major sport. In fact we were finally admitted into the league this year 5 years of try- ing. Vince Mulligan has left the ice to take over. We do not know anything about the players. In fact the only thing we know about the game is that- only the goalkeeper can handle the ball and that the object of the game is to kick the ball into the opponent's net and that that counts one. We be— lieve this is the extent of the knowledge of most fans here but we'll bet that, by the time the snow flies, there will be lots of grandstand "experts" to give Vince gratuitious advice. First home game will be on Sept. 28 again- st Mount»A. We'll play home and home games again- st Moncton, U.N.B. and Mount A. with the two top teams playing off with the top pair from N.S. Anyone interested in a tryout will be warmly welcomed. We couldn't find Barb— ara Mullally but, hope- fully, we'll have a few words soon from the dis- taff side of the campus. \
