He was tempted to negotiate and sign s. preliminary contract for aloan with aforeigner. I-Iis enemies questioned the validity of -the agree- ment, challenged the right of the Minister to sign a preliminary agree- ment without reference to Parlia- ment, declared the use of the seal of the ’Ml~:1istry to have;been contrary to law, and generally raised such a hub- bub in and out of Parliament that the Minister was compelled to go he- fore Parliament to explain his con- nections with the matter. STRTKERS’ BATTLE TU SAVE HOMES. - Tlilnlnnb, cole., october 21.- Strikers captured seven guards to- day at Cbicosa Junction, eight miles north oi Trinidad. It was also re- ported that they captured a Colo- rudo and South-eastern engine. For half an hour today _more than 125 strikers battled at n. mile range with several steel carloads of mine guards who were travelling over the Colorado and Southern railroad track ostensibly on their way to the Hastings mine. The strikers. at the Ludlow camp had been led to the be- lief that the guards were entraining to attack the tent colony and con- sequently set about to defend their temporary homes. ' Train derailers were set upon the track. the switches were thrown whenever possible, and a number of strikers armed- with power rifles en- trenched themselves at,a point a mile and n-hall from _the tent colony adjacent to the railroad. .. When the train first came into _-sight a - mile away the strikers began -llring. The engineer stopped the train :immediate- ly and the ‘guards returned the' fire. KEITI-I’S UNION SQUARE THEATRE, BOSTON One of the biggest comedy shows ever known or ever advertised any- where in the country is hooked to ap- pear at B. F. Keith’s Union Square Theatre during the week of Novem- ber 3rd, 1913. It is one continual laugh from start to ilnisb, with quite a few surprises. A mcclstel' musical production call- ed “The Purple Lady" will be pre- sented here for the first time by the well known composer, producer and mnn of many arts, Mr. B. A. Rolfe. The consensus of opinion from orit- ics everywhere is, "One of the great- est of Mr. Ro1fe's ncl1levements.'full qf excellent comedy and beautiful song numbers and possessing a cer- tain spirit that keeps things moving right up to the big surprise finish." There is a stamp of class which Mr. Rolfe puts on, but on this occasion, he has quite outdone himself ‘in the _matter of stage setting and costum- lllg, Another monster laughing feature that has scoredheovlly everywhere and will be oi the big hits ol the show is called, "The Big Surprise," which is the title of a comedy skit, presented by Margaret Sawtelle Duf- fy anda company of ten clever sn- tertoiners. _ Then comes Harry Tate’s Company of English Comedians in a scream- ingly funny satire on nutomohiling called, "Motoring." It was this identical company and production that appeared before the King and Queen of England and made them laugh till they cried. It is one grand comedy and one of thc few farces that ull oi us want to see over and over again. And still another good round of laughs may be secured in the new playlet, called, “The Girl from Childs" to be presented .by Miss Inez Macaulay and Company. The piece is deserving not only because of the capable manner in which it is presented, but also on account~ of its nriginality.- It is rich in humor and carries with it a wholesome moral. Most prominent among the other features will be Emmanuel Romain and Charles Orr, two well known vaudevlllians, presenting for the iirst time a novel protean specialty, which is full of surprises and comedy situ- ations and still another strong at- traction will be Frank Gordon and Rose Kinley, making their first ap- pearance here in a brilliant comedy skit., called, “In Toyland," which ls interspersed with bright chatter and cleverly rendered dances. The entire performance will he replete with nov- elty surprises and be one Of the greatest shows ever known in tbei history of this well known and popu- lar vaudeville theatre.
