this town was instantly killed by being

THE DAGGER AND THE CROSS.
Tn: story of “The Dagger and
the Cross' begins in the year
134 in Venice. Francesca, the
wife of Roublllac, a painter, is be-
loved by Zilletto. a sculptor. Through the
power of hypnotic influence the woman
returns the love of the latter. Roublllac
and his wife are persuaded by Lorenzo
avzrsat, _to leave Venice for __England,
,tile lorlieria 'engaged to decorate
the chapel on the estate of Sir George
Talbot. The real action of the play begins
in the castle of Talbot on Christmas Eve.
Roubillac and Francesca are again happy
and contented. Then Zilletto‘s voice
and shortly afterwards he enters. The
old relations are renewed, though Zillet-
to adds an intrigue* with Mary, the
daughter of Sir George and the sweet-
heart of a splendid young Englishman
Clegg. Zilletto knowing that Rcnbillac
wants him to give up Francesca. offers to,
do so on condition that Roubiilac_
impersonateapriestand marry him to
Mary. In his desperation Roublllac
agrees and a secret marriage takes place.
After the ceremony, however, Zilletto
breaks his word to Ronblllsc, and the
latter lies in wait in the forestj to kill his
persecutor. When Zilletto and Mary
meet near Roublllsos hiding place they
encounter Clegg. The men quarrel. The
Englishman hurls the Venetian against
the very tree which conceals liaubillsc
and the latter takes this opportunity

heart. It is night and Clegg does not wit,-

makes his confession he dies of the dread
disease. His death and atonement lift

Mary are reunited.
