(`., re resented the schooner "(`:v'rene" and Donald. of the "Aranmore," Caliiillil Murphy and crew of the “Cv'rene." the ner was in close proximity at the time of the accident. collision occurred on August 27th at 6.42 p. m. A moderate westerly wind was blowing when the Aranmore left Picton wharf and a 2% knot current was running. The Capt. alld Second Of- ficer were on the bridge. The Captain said they were practically upon thc ranges when the collision took place. He noticed two sailing vessels beat- ing in. one on each side ofthe bow ot' the "Aranmorc-." The "t`yrene" was on the starboard and headed northwest upon the port tack. The width of thc channel at the place of the collision was about onetifth mile. The steam er was going at full speed, about 14% ` knots. The steamer' attempted to pass ` between the two schooners. 'i`he stea» nlcr's whistle .was sounded. The steamer struck the “Cy'rene" head on and about right angles amidshlpsf Capt. llinrphy of the (`yrene‘testliied. that he was bound for Picton,and was tacklng up the harbor when the col- lision occurred. He maintained that tho course he took was the proper course and theronly course he could take, in order to avoid u collision; that the schooner "Henry Dicks" had tile right of way and that he _could not avoid crossing the bow ofthe steamer' in time to avoid the collision; that he was under the impression that the steamer would pass ast-ern of his schooner and that there was ample room for him to have done so. Tilc two schoollers were so close at the time and the steamer going fllll speed' in broad daylight, that he expected the steamer would vary her course so as to go astern of the schooner. This she did not do but proceeded on her straight course at full speed until thc collision took place. Capt.
