The latter visited this Island with the late Sir Jobn Young prior to Confederation, and subse- quently visited Canada as Equerry to the Princess Louise and the Duke of Con- naught. Sir Donald Stewart received his appointment as Field Marshal on the Queen’s Birthday honors of the 24th of May last. Lord Mount-Stephen, who looks on Canada as his home, will remain for some months. Councillor Fennell moved in amend- ment that the matter be referred to the Mayor and Street Committee, te be dealt with as they see fit. The amendment carried. A bill of $10.05 from McLeod, Morson & McQuarrie, for services rendered some time ago in connection with a seizure, was referred to the Finance Committee and the Recorder. A letter from Philip Coyle, asking com- pensation for certain iand expropriated by the city, was referred to the Street Com- mittee and the Recorder. A petition from certain residents cf Richmond and West Streets, asking that these two streets be connected by a road- way, was referred to a special committee composed of Councillors Taylor, Douse and Fennell, to ascertain cost of roadway and sewer, and report at next meeting. Councillor Taylor moved that the City Surveyor be instructed to put down a plankway on the east side of Hillsborough Street, between Mark Wright’s showroom and Parson’s forge. Councillor Fennell moved in amend- ment that the matter be left in the hands of the Street Committee. The amendment carried. A request from William G. Mugford, asking permission to operate a photograph saloon on Market Square, was not granted. Councillor Taylor gave notice that at | the next regular meeting he would move | that $10 a month be granted John Mc- | Court, an old and true servant of the city who had been laid aside for some time past owing to illness, said grant to con- tinue until he is able to resume work. A letter was read from John P. Joy asking for a license to operate a_ billiard hall on Water Street, near the Queen Hotel. The clerk was instructed to write Mr. Joy, referring him to the by-law in such cases made and provided. A petition from a number of citizens asking for amendments to the by-law regarding sign-boards, posts, etc., was also read. No action taken. A letter was read from W.S. Stewart, stating that if the awning in front of the place of business of ex-Councillor Morris, ; on Lower Queen Street, was removed, as | threatened, the city would be held responsible. Mayor Dawson said the City Surveyor had told him that everyone had complied with the law in this respect except Mr. Morris. His Worship also called attention to certain other encroachments on the eireet in the shape of fences. Coun.
