Mr Rankin was working at t-he Perth Amboy dry docks on the morning of his death. He held the position of dock master superintending the docking of vessels. A schooner was being hauled up and Mr. Rankin was placing the kneel blocks. In order to move the blocks quickly he took a hitch with a rope around a revolv- ing shaft-_ which runs the length of the dock. It is supposed that his clothes were caught between the shaft and rope. Mr. Rankin was whirled around. his head striking repeatedly the timbers.
