(l-Eerth- bound ior o. iew hours the mighty German air liner Grai Zeppelin rested in the naval hangar here to- day while workmen prepared her ior her round-the-world flight which bc- ' gins Wednesday. Patching and paint- ing, dozens o1 puny humans crawled I over the big silver covering oi the Crai, repairing the damage caused as she buiietted the winds in her 95 hour voyage from Germany. Mean- while other crcws were pumping iuel and hydrogen into her tanks. The greatest oi caution was taken as the workmen scurried about their tasks. No one was allowed to ascend to the upper floor oi the hangar un- less they wore rubber soled shoes as , a- precaution against a spark being struck off near the gas filled bag oi the Zeppelin. Hand pumps were us- ‘ ed ior the iuel lines, there being‘ danger oi sparks irom electric-driv- en pumps. Seven hundred and ninety thous- and cubic ieet oi ethane gas will be pumped into the Grafs tanks to re- place the iucl gas used on the west- ward trip. The ship will need 530,000 cubic ieet oi hydrogen to replace the lost lilting gas. In addition, live tons oi gasoline will be placed aboard. By working all night the task is ex- pected to be completed by 3 o'clock Tuesday afternoon. Dr. Hugo Eckener supervised part oi the work. The Zeppellns mot- ors, he announced, were in pericct condition. Only a iew tiny holes were torn in the envelope by the ocean winds, and they were easily re- paired and painted. Dr. Eckener hopes to point the nose oi his crait eastward some time Wednesday on its iourth crossing oi the Atlantic Ocean. Only three stops will be made in the Oral’ Zeppelins round- the-world flight. From Lakehurst the airship will head ior Priedrichshafen, its home hangar. The second stop will be at Tokio, and irom there the Zeppelin will iollow the great circle route over the Pacific to Los Ang-eles.
