Interesting Lecture At The ' Forum A thei-ne of special interest was delivered by Evangelist 1". W. Johnston at the 110mm last nisht when he explained what it was that Christ nailed to the cross when he was crucified. Many people, he said. think that Christ abolished I-lia law, the ten com- mandments, and made no distinc- tion between these ten precepts iuld the old Mosaic law that was concerned in offering aiiinlals. But Mr. Johnston maintained that the ten dments were binding on all chrlstians while the old Mosaic law was abolished at the moss. He referred to 2 Cor. 8: ‘i-ll. where it speaks of the "Ministra- tion of Death." that is there said to have been written and en- graven in- stones, and which was done away with. Many, he said, thought that this was the ten pre- cepts because it says theywere written in stones. He gave three reasons why the ten commandments could not pos- sibly be the "Ministration of death. First, he said, the ten oom- mandlnents condemn putting people to death. It says: "Thou shalt not kill.” secondly it condemns the thing that produces depth which is sill, and thirdly Paul forbids call- ing the law death in Romans '1: l2, l3. This being true we must look elsewhere to find the minis- tration of death. The answer to this, the evangelist said, is found in the law of Moses. He read in Exodus 2i: l2, l6, 1'1, where under the civil administraton of Moses, people werirput to death for about every offence. Even animals who committed depredations such as goring people to death, were put to death for it. Verses 28-85- In fact the evangelist said that the ecclesiastical laws as well as the civil laws of Moses consisted in killing animals all the tImeJIt. was truly a ministration of death. But was the law of Moses writ- ten on stones, he enquired? He said they were, but not on tablets of stone like the ten command- ments. The law of Moses was writ- ten on an altar of whole stones that were gathered from the river Jordan when the Israelites passed over it and it divided for them. ‘These stones were gathered, twelve of them, and when Israel went to Mount Ebal they built the altar and plastered them together and while the mortar was still wet they wrote upon the altar a copy of the law of Moses. The evangelist reed Deut. 27: i-B, and Joshua B: 80-32. inuupport of his statements. This, then. he said, and not the ton commandmen‘ , is what was writ- ten on the stones that. were called the “Ministration of Death." This law of Moses, he said, was nailed t0 the cross including all the old - ceremonies. It was not done liter- ally but figuratively in the person of Christ when I-ie was nailed to the cross Himself. Instead of the ten command- ments being abolished. the evan- gelist said they were immutable ind everlasting. He said it was folly to of‘ the command m“ against killing, stealing, lying, etc. as being done away; for since ‘wherenciawiatherecanbem wanagression." Min 4: 15. Thera- ‘fore if the ten commandments were abolished there would be no ID. and if no sins them would be no need of a Saviour. He urged all Christians to be obedient to these eternal precepts and ‘said the world would be better off if they were observed. ' LIAVIS I03 BYDNIY (Off.
