Sold by all druggisfs, The Worlds Radium Supply Northern Canada is likely to give the world another great mine, the product of which will be more pre- cious than gold. Within the next two or three years the Great Bear Lake region, near the Arctic Circle. may produce a supply of radiuni so large as to decrease materially the present prohibitive price and make this marvellous curative available ei-cu to the snuiilcr hospitals. "This is the most important mineral dis- covery in many years," said H. S. Spence. of the Canadian Depart- ment of Mines, addressing a gather- ing of the American Institute of Mining in New York, on February 16th. “Two veins have been proved over a combined length of 2,000 feet, and pitchblcnde has been found at several points over a distance of two miles. Samples of the ore show one gram of radium to between six- aiid-zi-half and thirteen tons of orc." A grain of i‘ndii.uii is now worth $70,000 and there is only about ri pound of it available for all the worlds hospitals. New York has about $1,000,000 worth at pres- ent wiicreas there is at least $200,- 000,000 worth urgentlv needed for the trentnicnt of cancer in the hos- pitals of all lands. Eight hundred miles from the nearest rail head, G:-eat Beur Lake is beyond the reach of the ordinary prospector. Mining experts, backed by six Can- adian mining companies, going in by aeroplane, have reported deposits' of gold and silver with the pitch- blende, but there is not likely to be any "rsdiumrush," to the Arctic Circle, when trips to that region by air cost about $2,000 and mining machinery and transportation entail tremendous difficulties. There is no refinery in the region now to ob- tain the radium, but the Depart- ment of Mines predicts that there will be one soon. LOBSTERS ASPIIYXIATED BY DRIP FROM ICE Experiments conducted as part of the work at the Atlantic Biological Station at St. Andrews, N. B., show why the shipper of live lob- sters must sec to it that the ship- ments are protected against drip from melting ice. ' In brief, the d_rip has exactly the same effect as follows from im- mersing a. lobster in fresh water- the respiratory mechanism fails and ssphyxistion ensues, though less rapidly than in t.he case of immer- sion. Drlp and immersion alike are also accompanied by a decrease in the lobster’s concentration of blood. “Experiments were carried out," reports A. F. Chaisson, the research worker in charge, "to determine the effect of drip from melting ice on lobsters under shipping condit- ions, controls being used which had identical conditions except for the elimination of the drip. The drip was found to affect the lobsters in the same way as immersion in fresh water, though the time requir- ed was greater. It produced fail- ure of respiration and decrease in the concentration of the blood. Death occurred in all cases of drip. The importance of protecting lolr sters from drip during shipment is thus demonstrated." In addition in these particular experiments, various other stud’es of importance to the lmster indust- ry were under way last year under the direction of the Biological Board of Canada, which operates under the authority of the Minister of Fisheries. Four stations-two on each coast of the Dominion-are con- ducted bv the board purely for pur- poses of fisheries research and ex- perimcntntion. C., the light- gathering mirror, which in this case is six feet in diameter, is pla- ced at the bottom of a long tube and on it falls the light from the heavenly body. The mirror's sur- face ls so shaped that all this light is reflected to another mir- ror snd eventually converges to s point image. In the reflecting telescope keep- ing the mirror in the best. of con- dition is sn important function. Unlike the ordinary commercial mirror where the silver is deposit.-~ cd on the rear surface and protect- ed from the elements by s paint preparation, the silverlng is on th front surface and is always expos- ed to weathering influences. 'Var- ious ngcncies cause it to deteriorate and lose the high reflecting power it possessed when first silvcrod. These include smoke from forest. flris, dust particles. and sudden changes of temperature. The sil- verlng of the 'I2 inch mirror is not ss sk S? .Limited two tons and the containing cell about six tons. The first step is to place the mirror with its contain- ing cell on the silvering car. Here they are supported at three points, the mechanism permitting the cell to be rocked slightly when the sil- vering solutions are pound on the mirror. _ The next step is to clean off the old coating of silver after which n strip of waxed paper is tied tightly around the edge of the mirror and sufficient distilled water is placed upon the mirror to cover the sur- face an inch or so in depth. The silverlng and reduction solutions are now, prepared and are mixed as they are poured on the mirror. The chemical _ action begins in about three or four minui/es, the solution being kept agitated by rocking the mirror. In about fif- teen or twenty minutes, the pro- per thicknoss of a coating having been deposited on the mirror, the solution is drained off.
