SIR.-A number of the clergy and laity
in Canada have recently expressed their
opinions in strong terms of disapproval
of the political bribery and corruption at
present carried on by the people's repres-
entatives and their party followers. To
rdad those utterances of warning and de-
nunciation one might be led to believe
that a resort to ways that are dark and
mysterious on the part of politicians to re-
tain their hold upon public patronage is
` something unprecedented in the history of
our country. But this is not so. Political
bribery did not originate with the present
Federal or§Provincial Governments, nor
with their Tory predecessors. Its birth
dates further back into the dim past than
many of our rnoralists and teachers of an
ideal system of practical ethics may sup-
pose. It is onlya modified form of' the
pillage of the weak by the strong. It was
