This was elquenly responded to by G W P Kirby. P. L. W. P. Anderson of Kensington, Charlotte: in this province.” He said : When the firet public eftort dealing with the liquor question in our early colonial days was made the writer cannot deter- mine. ‘The first efforts were in the line of the enactment of license laws which were smwended from timeto time with further restrictions finally reaching a somewhat effective local option Jaw as applying to the province except this city. This l.w being superseded in the years 1878-9 by the Canada Jemperauce Act. In the early partof this century a few advunced moral reformers were daring to advocote tota! abstinence, notably the Rev. Mr. Paterson, Presbyterian Minister of Bedeque with Rev. Mr. Suowball Methodist Minister on that circut at that time and Mr. Gould, gravduncie of Presi- dent Scburman of Cornell University, who organized in Beceque @ total absiinence societe about 70 yearsago. They were assisted shortly afterwards by tha Rev. Mr. Tupper, father of Sir Charlies Tupper, wtooccupied the Baptist church there about the year 1830. These faithful pioneers built up @ strong society which did excellent work ia that most thriving community. The youogest and perhaps now the only surviving member of it is Mr. Solomen Schurman of Central Bedeque wio notwithstanding his advanced yewrs etili retains c ear recollections of its meet- ings. AGAIN IN THE THIRTIES a society was started in this city, known as the Charlottetown Temperance Society. But from what we can learo, it was tem~ perance with permissions and exceptions, and perhaps dispesations. Jn the year “41 it adopted the principle of entire abstin~ ence from ali intoxicants, and to gain strength by larger organization it became auxiliary 'o an English eociety of that day. An effort was put forth to spread the eociety throughout the country Gistricts. This effurt was pot as successful as its friends wished. Still, this society did ex- cellent work in the way of public discuss sion on the evils of the drink traffic. In order to procure literature well suited to the needs of the people, it offered a prize for the best essay on temperance. The Rev Dr L C Jenkins, then rector of St Paul’s Church, the Rev James Waddel, classical tutor to the Central Academy; and Daniel Hodgson, Esq, then Clerk of the Crown and Coroner of the Island, were appointed adjudicators. In due course they awarded the prize for what they deemed the best essay tothe Rev Jobo Knox, of this city, whose life filled so large a place amongst us. That essay did an inestimable amount of good educational work; aud although written 58 years ago, would be accepted today by the most ad- vanced crank on the temperance question ‘There is Solid Comfort I TELLS % In baving your house heated by Steam or Hot Water, Why not have it done right away before the cold weather sets in, and have the enjoyment whic» comes from a comfortably beated nouse, We guarantee entire satisfaction and our guarantee means some= thing.
