Panther 510 What with all the time Since we last faced a Cadre deadline we don't know where- to start so think we might go back to the beginning (there is an original idea) just before Kmas break & tell about the two GOOD games that the Basketball Panthers played against UNB winning the first by 7 points & the the second 93-91 in an overtime struggle that fans will be recalling ten years from now. It was 85—85 at the end of regulation time-& when UNB scored 6 quick ones our cause seemed hopeless. As we struggled back our regulars were fouling out & when Anson McLaughin 1 was the only UPEI, starter on the floor. It was a glo— ious victory & we hope, will give the boys a lot of confidence. Unfortunately we were unable to get any games during the holidays & succumbed to Mount A last week by a score of 83-75. In league play that leaves us ith a 2—2 record. This past eek they twice toppled a _ highly touted University of aine team from Machais by good margins & this week Havel to Antigonish for two exhibition games with X. ext home, & league game, Our Lady Panthers(Basketball) lost at home to the more Xperienced UNB & Dal teams thletic department AS a part of the Keep Fitf? Program, UPEI's Department of Physical Education and Athletics, is,offering a unique Jazz Class conducted by Andre Denis, Choreographer -. ’ fl l'cifiIeoyjl'laco scored the winner Phil Connolly‘ ' no.“ emu" ck Rises, but, on the road played well against SMU losing 64—58 but gained their first league victory of the season by" downing the X—girls 56—50 in Antigonish. Susan Cosh got 19 points in this game. The Hockey.Panthers were on the Prowl looking for opponents all during the break beating the Summerside Juniors Sherwood Parkdale, an All— Star Charlottetown Junior team and Sandy's Royals... .Jack Kane had his men all fired up with the idea that‘ they were going to pull off the upset of the season when they faced the SMU Huskies last Saturday night & they dam near did. The Halifax Herald columnist described it as the “best game in three years" & not many in the rink would disagree. With the large crowd of Islanders on-hand(Radio listeners will be amazed that all that sound inter- ference was'made by about only 100 fans!!!) to cheer them on our boys took an early lead & were ahead 4-3 with only 22 seconds to go when Cochrane scored the equalizer. The overtime belonged to SMU & the final score was 6-4. Only 22 lousy seconds. We'd call Jamie MacLeod the real hero of this game... he scored two goals & was a doubtful “starter with his right hand in a cast & a boil the size of'a silver dollar on his lower back. The whole team offers in: classes Mr. Denis, a well known Canadian dancer and choreographer steps and moves are to the is working primarily with coeds but the class is open to all members of the University community. It is an excellent opportunity to learn some of the successful Feux Follets jazz—steps and, ingrqve.,0nes ‘night in Antigonish against . opening minute & had contrql 'I3—2..They were two good games ,'and, after the hair raising . MacLean got the winner with The Cadre, January 2], 1975, Page 9 played well, although losers could well walk out of that rink with their heads held high. Donnie Brown & Wayne Bernard got our‘other scores. As we saw the game the next St F.X. we lost TWO games in Halifax on Saturday night for the team on the ice bore little resemblance to the UPEI team who played SMU. They just could not get started... it was a game where both teams started with a 1—5 record & we expected an exciting & even contest but X scored in the of the gamefor the full 60 minutes. Dave Murnaghan, Phil Clayborne & Doug MacLean were the UPEI scorers. The final minutes of the match~ were greatly enlivened by an outburst between the Panthers bench & adjacent fans, highlighted by Doug MacLean's receiving an early and ' unpleasant shower from a frantic fan who must have been’indulging in an expect— orant & saving it up.‘ This part is being written / for a deadline, after our return from Fredericton where we acquired four points by downing'UNB 6—5 and a "Do—or die" winless band of Tommies finale of the UFB game Jack‘ Kane told his warriors to go out & get an early lead..in the STU game. They did not follow instructions & it was a cliffhanger until Doug 28 seconds to go in the third period... Scorers in the two games; carmichael with 3, MacLean 3, Jamie MacLeod,Wayne Bernard & Ray Dunn with singles. These two wins, together with the pleasant prospect of 7 straight games to be played at home, put the Panthers .right back into the running for a fourth place playoff 9 spot. Moncton,Acadia & Saint Mary's have but one loss each, at the time of writing, and no other team is close to unanimous in voicing that _they'll make it..get out and the 50% marks SO that a String shout them on..next games ~of home wins would put us Friday the 24th against x into the running for Maritime Acadia & Dal on Sunday the honours...the Panthers are 26th. . ,physical conditioning.
