Dr. Morrisson in St. Dunstan’s ( mere laa Sunday delivered an loquent sermon on the sin of pride. By pride L ucifer though endowed by the Creator with the highest intelli gence fell from his high estate. Pride is one of the chief causes of much of discontent and unhappi- ness that exist in the world to-day. It produces in the breast of man emotions of the most disagreeable nature, and unfits him for the performance of the the misery, duties that he owes to himself, to his family, and to his neighbor. It often prevents him from making a living, even in an honorable way, for his chiid- ren and those depending, upon him. Otten the pride of empty self-assertion brings upon the heads of the assertor the burning coals of powerful opposi- tion. He counselled his hearers to suppress the suggestions and prompt- ings of the first cf the deadly sins. He exhorted the peeple to cultivate the virtue of humility. But in the culti- vation of this virtue he asked no one to give up his self-respect which is a car- dinal principle and should always be maintained. It was customary for persons who had in their hearts but the semblance of humility to accuse themselves of many weaknesses and imperfections. But these same per-— sons resented most bitterly the slight— est allusions to anything in their natures short of the highest virtue. The mock humility ofthe hypocrites he severely condemned. Humility was sometimes assumed in order that the dissimulation might not be detect- ed. The man without pride was undis— turbed amid the concerns of life whilst the proud man was tossed about by every wind of passion. The envy ot his soul came to the surface at al- most every word and look of his friends, his neighbor, or his associates. The proud man was a hindrance and an annoyance. The humble man was a sunbeamfon the pathway of the world. Full of practical advice forcibly and eloquently delivered was Dr. Morris- son’s sermon of last Sunday. The greatest and strongest natures are ever the calmest. A fiery reckless- ness is the symbol of frailties nct yct outgrown. ‘The repose of power is its richest phase and its clearest testimony. Philadelphia Times. A Boy’s Faith. An account of,the life of Judge James B. Bradwell, of Chicago, by his daughter, tells a story of the deeply religious training of his childhood. He had the old fashioned faith in: the efficacy of prayer, before he was of suffi- cient age to understand the reasonable limits of such petitions. ] Once when James was only eight years old, the waggon was sent to Chicago for provisions. Five days elapsed , thc waggon was detained, and the Bradwell family was without food and without a man to provide it. Little James, as usual with even small boys of the time and place, was a good shot. His mother loaded the gun for him, and he started out to see what he could shoot to supply the table. In due time he saw two prairie chickens not faraway. Hegot his gun ready, and then took long enough to pray thus : “O Father, if you will just let me bring down those two chickens, I['l give your minister the choice of the pair.” The trigger was pulled, and down came the two prairie chickens.
