-The week-ly half holiday of the
stores in Bummerslde was inaugura-_
ted yesterday. As 3 result the town
was practically deserted in the after-
noon. Nearly all the clerks attended
the tea at Misrouche.
-Fine weather-favored the tea at
Mlscouche yesterday was attended by
over $3,000 people. Everything pas-
sed off quietly and all present thor-
oughly cnjoycd themselves. The pro-
ceeds amountcd to about $1,500.
The Abcgweits are sending Michael
Paul of this city to Amherst, where
he will represent his club at the Ram-
`bler’s Field'Sports to be held tomor-
row. f-fe will leave this morning an-d
will compete in the 100, 220, 440, and
880 yard distances. `
In the summary of the Free-for-all

morning the case of J. Thomas P.

ed. There are no deaths. All are
well. Alexander's store and the

sented their teacher, Miss Henrietta

Ronald Campbell. of Sum-merside,
was in the city yesterday, on h-is w-ay
home from China Point, where he has

with hay ami oats for Campbellton,
N. B. Mr Campbell was naturally

th-at place. His two sons-in-law, Jas
and A. E. Alexander, general merch-
ants, were both burned out. His son
Fred Campbell was employed in the
store of the latter and his wife was
on n visit to her daughter, Mrs Ja-s.

ceived bv his son. John E. Campbell

safe and contriidicted the uncom-

plosion in one of the Alexander

Tipton Street, Winnipeg, was the

24th ult., Miss Bernice Nelson of

marriage to N. A. MacMillan, form-

Winnipeg. The ceremony was per-
formed by the Rev. Mr. Walker. The
bride was attended by Miss Georgie
Young, who accompanied her from

education-by the failure of our Gov-
ernment to rise to the needs of the

~ sion, honorable and important as it
is, the remuneration remains practi-
cally at a standstill or is propor-
tionately lessi than it was twen-ty
years ago, notwithstanding the fact
that the, cost of living has- increased
very- greatly. For this condition of
affairs the Government has offered
no remedy, and it would seem by the
reports of the annual school meet-
ings that in many places the people
have reduced the supplemental
grants. Does it mean that both
Government and people are trying to
drive the teachers from the profes-
sion altogether? Fellow teachers, it
seems to me that the hope of needni
reform in educational conditions
must he again deferred and be a
thing of the future. Under such cir-
cumstances nn blame can be attach-
nd to our teachers for deserting the
profession in this Province for West-
ern fields. Let us trust that when-
oiir Government. does take up the
report of that Commission that
great things may be don:-. for our
noble profession.
But although little has been donc
towards the placing of our remuner-
ation on an equal with that of equi-
valent service in other ceilings, con-
siderable advance has been made in
the qualification of the teachers, so
that the young teacher of today,
though his norm.-al training is far
from adequate, comes into the
school much better equipped than
his predecessor of ten or fifteen
years. Manual training, increased at-
tention to nature studies, hotany and
have been unable to procure eminent
educationalists from some of the
other Provinces as their intention
was. but we have on our program a
number of papers from leading teach

The Sacrament of the Lord's Sup-
per was dispensed in the Presbyter-
ian Church at Hartsville o_n Sah-
bath, July 10th. Special meetings
day till the following Monday noon.
These meetings were very largely at-
tended in the forenoon and evening
of each day. The people seemed to
be deeply impressed. The Rev. John
Gillis, thc pastor, was ably assisted
by the Rev. John Macintosh of Syd
ney, N. S., also by the Rev. Mr.
Green of I-lroolzfleld and the Rev. A.
D. McKenzie, returned missionary
from Damerars. Six were admitted
in the fellowship and communion of
the church on profession of their
faith in the Saviour of mankind, al

a century and the Gaelic precenter
for a much longer period, and who
is now in the ninetieth year of his
age, attended all the meetings and
led the Gaelic singing some of the

another, and which has no definite
origin, is to the effect that a newly-
dug- grave was found in Cunning-
onm's ~field in Albcrton near the
scene of the supposed drowning acci-
dent.

later, will put a new appearance on
the latest tragedy in the western
town and It would appear as -if there
was room for shine further envqulry.
Another report current was that
two parties had rather suddenly and
mysteriously disappeared from Al-
berton, but whether or not their ab-
sence can be connected wit-h the un-
fortunate deiith of W. J. Skerry can-
not he ascertained.
The gravity of these reports. led

the Attorney General as to the act-
ion to be taken by his department
in the case. It was learned that the

more definite before taking any fur-
ther investigation.

ency towards inereased agricultural
education might he very good if we
could give the child f-be practical
