The report was presented by Mr. R. RAI-lurst of the Plant Pathology Laboratory. He told those present that a dis- ease of potatoes characterized by brittleness and breaking of stalks and petioles has been often ob- served in fields located in light soil in this Province. The report went on to state that in midsummer the affected planm develop brown, necrotic streaks which later coalesce and extend into the vascular tissue. The most severe cases generally have been noted in the Chippewa and Cherokee varieties, iii-cugh in the commercial types the Sebago is most often affected. Mr. Hurst also pointed out that surveys have shown that some growers employ a split program for potato spraying. In such a pro- gram a carbsmate is used in the first part of the season and a cop- per fungicide for the later treat- ments, This treatment was examin- ed by ihe Federal authorities last year and the results they obtained. according to the report. indicate that s straight program is super- ior to a split one so far as the fungicides tested were concerned. Island Hospital but they failed to reach the city until 2 p. m. the following day when they reached Dunstaff- nage in the storm and were forced to remain at a residence there un- til the storm let up and the plough came out for them.
