R \\ \ l ictory Loan The C.P.R.’s Example THE following extract from 1 -.1 circular issued i by Lord Shaughnessy to the Ofi"1ce1's and Employees of the Canadian Pacihc Railway Company ex- plains clearly the reasons why the wage earner andthe salaried Employee should buy Victory Bonds. The C.P.R. is under- writing bonds for its Employees because it knows the people must subscribe to make this Loan a success:- TO OFFICERS AND EMPLOYEES: Public aiinouncements have, no doubt, made ofiicers and employees familiar with the issue of the so-called “Victory” bonds in denominations of $50, $100, $500 and $1,000, by the sale of which the Canadian Goveriment desires to raise the sum of $150,000,000, or more, necessary to ‘inance purchases to be made in Canada for the Allies. The officers and employees of the Canadian Pacific Railway Company have already proved their patriotism in many ways, and it is natural to expect that in line with such patriotic ellort many of them will desire to invest what they can afford in this vitally important loan. No better service can at present be rendered to Canada and to the interests of officers and employees themselves than by taking up these bonds. The agriculture, 'the industry and the commerce of Canada are at present largely de- voted tp the production, supply and transporta- tion of foodstuffs, munitions and equipment for the Allies, and the loan is required to Finance the continued activities in such directions. Without the money required, the prosperity of the whole country is imperilled. and we might have to forpsee unemployment on an unprecedented sca e. t Tlic "Victory" bonds have the strongest guarantee that Canada can offer, namely, that of the Canadian Government itself, and the gener- ous rate oi interest, SA per cent., means that the return on the money invested is good. _ 'l`hc bonds as issued by the Government will be pa'/able ten per cent. on December lst, 1917, one iiistalmcllt of ten per cent. january _Znd 1918. and tour li-loutlily instalments ol twenty ocr ccrii__ but in ol der to make it easier for oflicerr --vid emolovees to purchase bonds, the Canadian "’~'n_‘iiic Railway Company will arrange to carry these hoods, llndertaking the pavmerit on th' required dates of such bonds as oliicers and em- UIOYCPS pledge themselves to subscribe for. ant' Wfelldillii to such ol`i`1cers and employees th' lates of navmcllt on the basis oi ten per cent ofii-_ month, bein-cf $5 per month on each $50 sur utrlbcd, thus spreading the payments evenly over ten months, instead of six. Such payments.wil‘ be deducted from the salary or wages as speciiiul on the pledge form attached (to the circular;. 1
