i on which that government acts. HASZAR.D'S GAZETTE, JANUARY 16. E.A8ZAR.'D’B GAZETTE. iednesday. J .16, 1856.. Wu cannot. for our own sake as well as for his, sull'.:r the charge made by the Editor of the Islam!-Ir in the pa ier of the 1 th insi., to go un- noticed. We hail hoped, that our contempora- ry knew us better and gave us credit for more manly and more gentlomanly feeling than to suppose for one instant, that we alluded to the slander in the Eraminer for the amiable pur- pose of—as he states-“ assisting to give, what they consider a personal dctraetion,a wider circulation.” So far from it, we chose that articular item out of the numerous specimens or its extreme absurdity. But it is the pecu- liar and the unfortunate distinction of those engaged in party controversy, that they can never see an thing but hostility in the expres- sion ofan ii verse opinion. Among party wri- ters, e maxim “ those who are not for us are against us,” is received in all its force, and hence. ifa friend happens, to disagree with them in opinion, they immediately turn round and attack him wi an acrimony which is wholly undeserved. We have not the book, or we should quote that amusing letter of Major Jack Downing, where he describes himself as having got into the l'residcnt.'s study and put on his spectacles, and, to his astonishment, everything he read in the papers had an oppo- site meaning to that which it had when read without them. l’eeul;ition, extravagance and corruption without the spectacles, read probity, economy and public virtue \vi eni, so dis- grace was turned into glory, defeatinto victory. And. knowing this, as we do know it, and that evei-ytliiiig the p:irtis.in looks at he sees through a medium tinctured with the colour of his own [)l‘0jlltll('L't4, we never siitll-r our minds to dwell a rrioment upon the characters which are drawn by the pen ol' party spleen and diszrppointincnt, nor place any greater faith on the rruircnilrlancc ofthosc which are painted in roseate lines in the ardor and triumph of success. Take any reiiiarlcalile eliaracter you pl.-ase—Croiuwell for instance. He is Ill‘.I.\\'ll as an iipriglit man, as the chosen ol' the l.-oril to cli.istist- a wick-.-il and (l«'])t‘.l.\'0tl race, and to Ti‘.-'ollll'C the reign at" the Saints ll|.()ll e.irtli by the one side, and as an arch hypocrite, a devil incarnate, devoid of a single retleeiiiiiigvii-tiic by tlionthcr. 'l‘iinc,how- i-ii-,i', is coi‘i'ct-.tiii_-_; the pictures of the day, silt- cning down and strihiiig out S.)'.llt.‘ oi’ the harsh- er lines and soiiibie Sl|.‘\\ll‘S of the one ritlc. and iiiellowing the too vivid tints and glowing colors of the other, and the result is, a more :ii:niir.itc resemblance than could have been laid in his lille time. So, to compare small things with great, is it in the present day, that Governor llincks has his 0pp<)ll"lllS and his piirtisaiis, so has llowe, so has Sir Allan .\l‘N.ib, so has Johnston‘ and it ' " is dilliciilt to say where the truth really lies. The fact is, that these Colonies are now, to hor- row a figure l'rom ecology, in their Irmrsilimi state, to what they will ultimately settle down, time alone can tell; it is evident, however. that a good deal more ofchange must belocked for liefore their perriiaiiciit destination is achieved.‘ . . We have always been efopinion, that this giv- I ing of Responsible Government to the Colonies was done for the urposc of weaning them gra- dually from the i\ other Country, so that when the time for a final separation came, it we be ell'ecti-d without any of that hostility and acrimony of feeling that was so distinguishing a feature of the Revolution of the Thirteen Pro- vinces, and is unfortunate] , too prominent, and we fear, too deep seated in the resentday. We shall take our contemporary t ic Islundcfsl Q- definition of Responsible Government into con- sideration, and calmly and teuiperately examine into the correctness of it. lt is a matter of great importance that we should know not only y whom we are governed, but the prineiplesi lllsciumcs’ l\'s'ri1'i:rir.—Last evening Mr. John Williams, gave his instructive Lecture on “ Cornish Mining," to a full house; he ex- plained in a clear and lucid manner the mode of working the Veins or Lodes—and the means by which the Miners descend into and ascend from the pits, a distance of from sixty to two thousand feet. The Lecturer gave ample evi- dence of his thorough knowled of the subject and his familiarity with the girnisb dialect, the repetion of some of the terms of which was followed by applause and laughter; owing to the many branches of operation connected with the subject, he found it impossible to condense it into one short Lecture; and was therefore requested to give a continuation of the same during the present Session of the Institute. T. Heath llaviland, Esq., V. P., will lecture on Tuesday evening next, on “ Modern His- tory.”-Com.
