We are also grateful for the "News Let- ters" sent periodically, giving us helpful suggestions as to how we could improve our Campaign and also izzfoirning us of the progress being made in other centzes Canada. We feel that it was a great benefit to our campaign to have had several visits frmn Miss Hazel Hart as she is in touch with Seal Sale work across the Do- minion and 1's also in close touch with the large organization func- tioning in the United States. Our thanks are also due to Miss Frances Brophy of the National Tuberculosis Association in New York. The Seal Sale work la so well organized in the United Stat- es tlrat, we were able to get a great many valuable ideas from Miss Brophy. We sent a letter with Christmas greetings and a sample of ourBeals for 1988-39 to each oi’ the foreign countries doing tuberculosis work and we received scme very inter- " 32ml. Oi.’ course, travelling conditions on the Island are somewhat diffi- cult druring the winter months but an effort was made to visit some of the small towns along the rail- road. A special trf"; was made to Alberton and Tlgnish to visit pa- tients and also to give an address to the Catholic Women's League in these places. Another trip was made to O'Leary and a few of the patients in the nearby districts were visited by sleigh, Trips were also made to Summers-toe, souris, Montague and Geoxgetown. During the past year, 122 clinics have been held and a total of year benefit of a portable fluoroscope for use at these clinics. 748 home visits were made last year. ‘This year a special effort was made to have as many contacts of known tuberculosis casm examined as possible 467 of this group were examined. This phase of our work entails a lot of work but is very important. The nurse made many home visits in an efifort topersuade these contacts to be e nad as a precautionary measure. Those who were not contacted personally were sent a letter advising them to attend a. clinic in a convenient locality on a certain day, As the clinic work in Summer- sld-e has greatly increased, it was decided to hold two clinics a month instead of the usual_ monthly clinic. This extension of our work has been of great benefit to the Prince County people and saved them the trip to Charlottetown. We were fortunate in being able to secure Dr, l-Iowatfls services for this spe- cial work in Su-mzmerslde, At the present time we have 467 patients outside the Provincial Sanatorium. 0f these..173 are ac- tive cases. There are 40 with a positive sputum. If this work co-Jnues to in- crease. it can readily be seen that an additional staff will be required to cope with the situation . In conclusion, I wish to express my sincere appreciation to the Tuberculosis League Committee and to all the other persons too num- erous to mention who have given me so much encouragement and as- sistance during the past year.
