—_ oe 2 Ne a se —_———— The Heads of Great Men. or ee | It is usually supposed that men of great | intellectual powers have large and massive | heads; but, according to a writer in the | new edition of the Journal of Science, the | theory which Dr, Gilbert, physician to | Queen Elizabeth, was the first to suggest is not borne out by facts. An examination | of busts, pictures, medallions, integlios, Kec., of the world’s famous celebrities almost tends the other way. In the earlier paint- | ings itis true, men are distinguished by their large heads, but this is ‘Attributable to the painters, who agreed with the general opinion and wished to flatter their sitters. A receding forehead is mostly condemned. Nevertheless this feature is found in Alex- ander the Great, and, to a lesser degree, in Jalius Cwsar. The head of Frederick the Great, as will be seen by one of the por- traits in Carlyle’s work, receded dreadfully. Other great men have had positively small heads. Lord Byron’s was ‘‘remarkably small,” as were those of Lord Beaconsfield and Cosmo di Medici. Men of genius of ancient times have only what may be called an ordinary or everyday forehead, and Hero- dotus, Alcibiadas, Plato, Aristotle, and Epicurus, among many others, are men- tioned as instances. Some are even low- browed, as Burton, the author of ‘ The Anatomy of Melancholy ;” Sir Thomas Browne, and Albert Durer. The averaze forehead of the Greek sculptures in the frieze from the Parthenon is, we are told, “lower, if anything, than what is seen in modern foreheads.’’ The gods themselves are represented with ‘“‘ordinary, if not low brews.” Thus it appears that the popular notion on the matter is erronous, and that there may be great men without big heads —in other words a Geneva watch is capable of keeping as good time as an eight-day clock, ~ = Teaching Children to Speak Good English. At a recent meeting of the St. Louis Society of Pedagogy one speaker, in dis- cussing the question of teaching the child- ren to talk good English, declares that the books used to accomplish this ‘‘are alto- gether too abstruse for the children.” He illustrated this by quoting the rules from a book in use by pupils six years of age, which would be perfectly incomprehensible to such little ones. By actual count, in one of these books there are 125 rules and definitions, one of which he quoted as fol- lows :—‘‘When two words mean the same person or thing the same form is used after the asserting relation word as before it.” The speaker added that in teaching language the first thing was to find out what the children can do. They can talk, and here they and the teacher meet on common ground. Hence, let the first lessons be to teach the children how to talk. If they talk correctly they will write correctly when they know how to spell. The children shoald be led to talk—babble if the word suited better. Dolls, bows and arrows, and kites could be taken into the room; even a kitten might be introduced and talked about; this would help to banish restraint from the school. The children could talk upon them, and their errcrs of speech be corrected. Defini- tion or rules should be avoided. He be- lieved in the studying of words, but not in word analysis.
