An Ingenious if Lazy Way of Preouring velt— Wiy They Are so Cheap. It is from Alaska that these wol! skins come that furnish the material for the rug now so popular in house | furnishings, says the Chicago Journal. Che y are shipped thence by tens of thousands, and it may be imagined that the Esquimaux who kill the animals get an extremely small price for the pelts, which are sold at so low a figure after being cured and made up The secret of it lies ina scheme by which. the wolves are in- duced to destroy eac h other wholesale. The method is very simple. , The } into rugs | Esquimau takes a thin blade of flint, | chipped so as to be sharp as @ razor along the edges This he fastens securely to the end of a wooden stake, | and drives the latter deep into the ice, so that the tlint blade projects above. Then he binds a chunk of sea) blubber, around the flint blade with a string of sinew, thus concealing the sharp nstrument within. By and by along comes a big gray wolf. He is hungry, as wolves always are. His nose is supernaturally keen | and he has scented the dainty morsel of blubber from afar. Eagerly he begins to lick the fat, which is frozen hard. This process melts the blubber a little and it tastes delicious. Aftera short time his tongue comes into con- tact with the keen edge of the flint and it cuts. The blood flows. Ah! The flavor makes him wild, for he does not kvow that it is his own blood! By this time other wolves have arrived at the spot. These animals travel in packs, because only thus can they assail the reindeer and other large beasts with success. They like- wise lick the blubber, cut their tongues the flint and taste the flavor of blood. It maddens them, and in a few minutes the stake driven into the ice is the center of a crazy mob of ravening other | 7 n The y attack each and tig othe death. A party of hunters can set out in even @ brief northern day an infinite number of these awful battle-stakes, and the next day, and the next, and the next will not suffice for them to gather up the wolf skins which are the harvest of that stupeudous slaughter. The Alaskan plan of wolf hunting hasacharm peculiarly attractive to the leisure-loving Esquimau—it reduces the work toa minimum. His oly ob- jection to it is that, after the wolf gets himself thoroughly killed he can’t skin himself and convey his hideto the market town. His system is a more deadly and more wholesome one than that used by the Indians still farther south in driving the buggalo out of existence. But the wolves multiply fast enough to meet any demand. This isthe reason why wolfskin robes are cheay ° Facts About Ears. Itisonly among the more refined and civilized peoples that small ears upon women are considered pretty and a mark of aristocratic distinction. The Chinese, who admire little eyes and feet, look upon long, large and droop- ing earsasmarks of beauty; and cer- tain other peoples bore their ears and enlarge the holes until they can insert juite a nosegay in them, and are justly proud of this decoration as the young of a different civilization who lrags down a pretty ear into un- natural proportions with heavy jewels. Earrings are sometimes very injuri- ous to the health, and a woman with any tendency to scrofula should never assume the risk of boring the ears; nor can one be too careful in regard to wearing earrings that a diseased person has worn. A case is on record in Vienna of a young girl. who wore ear- rings given her by a friend who had died of consumption. She soon con- tracted thesame disease, which devel- oped ina manner identical with the case of her friend. Ears, by the way, are as eloquent as the tongue in showing disease. A very white, transparent ear shows a delicate constitution, with a tendency to tuber- culosis. Idiots have large, flabby ears, as travelers through certain parts of Switzerland, where such imbeciles abound, cannot have failed to notice. Ears vary greatly in regard to sensi- tiveness, some being vastly more nervous than others. Street noises are the most trying for the sensitive ear to bear, while the sounds of nature hard- vorInan ly evel jar, the most fastidious welcoming the sounds of wind in the tree tops, the murmur of brooks, the ngs of birds and even the roar of falling water.—Philadelphia Ledger. Printing on Fruit. In ail the great European cities the fruit dealers peaches, pears and apples, ete., ornamented with armorial bearings, initials, names and designs of various kinds. This work is effected in avery simple way. Fine fruit is taken just before ripening and paper designs neatly cut and pasted upon it. After a while these are removed and the part of the fruit that has been coy- ered is found to be of a beautiful clear white. sell The eusiene tate, The Crank—This is the last time I'll ever camp out. As almost all the companies are foreign, it was natural for them to refuse; and they threatened, iu case the order was persisted in, to stop all the trains. He asserts in a prefatory way that New York is the most Juxurious city in the world, and that expenditures are made on mere living with an elegance and ostentation unknown in any of the capitals of Europe. The total wealth of New York would, if equally divided, give 1o each man, woman and child of that city £3,756.82 —an amount greater than any other city in the world. Mr. Speed states that $20,400,000 are paid annually to the lawyers of New York; $11,328,000 to phy- sicians and surgeons; $3,000,000 to tue clergymen; $2,665,000 to architects; $1,- 609,000 to dentists; $13,020,000 to brokers. An avgregat of about $100,000,- 000 is spent annually for clothing, $10,000,000 for fura, $20,000,050 for diamonds and other jewels, $3,500,000 for cut flowers and growing plants; $20,000,- 000 on yachting (the boats representing an investment of $20,000,000), which something more than is spent yearly oo horses and carriages. The elevated rail- reads take in $12,000,000 for carfare, aud the surface lines $15,000,000 a total of $27,000,000 for going sbout New York. Mr. Speed estimates that $31,837,5000 are spent by New Yorkers each year for is bhuropean travels, $ 537,500 ot which go for steamship tickets. New Yorkers spend $30,000 for beer ad $90,000,000 for wine or spirits—alout sixty-six and twothird dollars toi each person per year. In their gifts to charit ies New Yorkers are most liberal, $9,000, 000 being the annual sum thus expended. More moneyis} spent in supporting and furthering church work in’ New York than is paidgall theatres and playhouses of the city. The total spent for amuse- ments is $5,900,000, while considerably more than $6,000,000 is contributed to the support of churches. “POR HALF A CENTURY.
