Sept 29.—On receiving the freedom of the city of Dunde? today A.J. Balfour, the first lord of the treas-~ ury,and government leader in the house of Commons, said the government had ‘‘onged for and bad _ s:riven for a peaceful and honorable solution of the perennial South African difficulty,” and “if that honorable solution does uot prove a peace - ful solution, the fault rests on other heads than ours,” WIRELESS TELEGRAPHY. The System to Be Put in Use in the Aleutian Islands. _ SEATTLE, Wn., September 29. —Supere intendent H.S. Pitchett, of the United States coast and gecdetic survey announces that he will make a new and somewhat novel use of wireless telegraphy. Next season the United States steamer Path~- finder wiil go to Alaskar waters to survey the island of the Aleutian group nett Unimak Pass. The islands, Mr. Pitchea says, have not been correctly located on government charts and maps. The Path-- finder was built a yearago at Elizabeth aud equipped with the latest appliances and iastruments, including ®pparatus for the new system of telegraphy. Several 15 and 20 miles apart, near Unimak Pass, have been selected as afield for the use of the wireless telegraphy. By this means the difference in latitude of th- | islands will be determined :o a fine paint. ~~ English and Dutch ianguages, and ful! | THE HALIFAX EXHIBITION. There was atime, not long ago either, when here at Cascumpec, a poor government official could not change his dory for a better one without long complaints reaching Ottawa, aod star chamber investigators appearing oo the sceneto hang quarter and draw the poortory offender. Put presto, change!A grit hath secured the job and he can deal in lobsters out of season and convert the Government yacht into a pleaeurer for the whole country. As you well put it last year, they have been hauling the lighthouse all over the sandhillsof tne north coast to give heelers help-money and keep sailors in mortal dread of ee. The ing. And theyare vot done yet. lights at Cascum pec harbor sre now an enigma to _ every- body,—even the skilful navigator whose visual ray has been so sharpened as to see Sandy I+land light frem Brian Island with the naked eye when it couldn’t be detected with a powerful telescope 100 yards to sea under tory management, is pow able to tay whetber he is entering Alberton or bas been biowr over to Mis- cou! Andthe boats in shore east ofthe harbor can’t see the light at ell,it appears. Thev?]!_have to order out all the faithful with their horses and accoutrements again befure the general election, to shift the lighthouse the 24:h part of ao inch, or dear only knows what may not happen. The Savage Island range bas been out two or three times tnis summer, and will likely goout indefinitely, but Mr. Palmer is evjoying the otiuvm cum dignitate of Charlottetown pending the nomination of auew Attorney-General,and there’s no bad tory to roast. The Government property is getting nicely plundered too. With much ex- pense Sandy Island was breastworked and stone ballasted; and for harbor interests itis important that those stones should remain where they are, and the island too. What happene? The firm which had pullenough recently to get $15,000 of public money back duty for political support—now use piles of those siones to ballast their own wharf. The block buil: for a range light has been pulled to pieces to accommodate those magnates, whilethe poor, miserable handliner may patch his paots in hunger and poverty, and tie his boat up to a favor- ed gris innocent lobster trap. The thing is running lovely. Dash away, dash away. my braves, at Cascumpec as at Ot~ tawa! Eat yourselves up, plunder and pillage, for the time approacheth quickly when you’ll have toearn under an honest government an honest dollar.
