Suchiis the men pmmiuent in political me not cub. talk, butfthere has been much of the same position side and now Mr. Herman ll. Cook, formerly the Liberal representative from Simcoe, has not only turnedagainst his old friends but has issued a sort of manifesto against the Liberal leaders, himself still posing as a Liberal of the old school. - ` - ' Cook' was born in 1337, and' is a -9 weiilthy lumber merchant who resides in Toronto. He was first elected to the Commons for North Simcoe in 1872. His opponent was the late celebrated Llilton McCai thy and the contest was si close one. Mr. Cook was nnseateQ§for corrupt practices by agents. At' tli_e_}-_subsequent by-election between the samoooutestants Cook was again returned gg-_a slightly increased magqrity.. In 1 McCarthy _was the victor over Cook; in_~¢_I_§8‘Z and 1887 i \b».~. Cook left North Simcoe to llI_cCarthy and was himself returned for Simcoe. In 1891 Mr. Cook again tried, conclusions with Mr. McCarthy in North §imcoe, but was beaten. In 1896 Mr. Cook contested Esst Simcoe and was beatenfy Mr. Ben- nett, Conservative. Then Bennett was unseated and at a by-elect-lon in 1897 Mr. Bennett was re-elected, again defeat- ing Mr. Cook. _ Some of the greatest electoral battles ever fcughtin Ontario were. those be- tween D‘Altou McCarthy Herman Cook. Both had ample niea_n_s_ and great Qghtiug pluck. McCarthy was the trusted lieutenant of Sir John Macdonald, and al- ways consulted by him in Ontario matters so long as Sir John lived. Coéhz, though a much less brainy man, also stood _well up in the favor of his own party leaders. Butmfter Sir John Macfloi:iald` died and Sir Jdin Thompson came to be leader of the Conservative party. McCarthy was no lo_i;$,'er consulted as before, and he gradu- ally ‘oec-mie estranged till in the Qlection of 1895 he practically went over and gave his support to Sir Wilfrid ~ Laurier. He maintained this attitude till his death in 1893. This in turn reacted upon Mr. Coo`:, who after repeated defeats sustainefl at the polls in the Liberal cause, found his old opponent received with favor by the Liberal leaders and found himself pa-.usefl orer while repeated appointments to the Senate were being made. It is a strange instance of what is pos- sible in political life to find trim men of such prominence and so stalwart in thel party iaith as were both Messrs McCarthy anfl Cook, each in his later life becoming the opponent of the leaders he had long supported and the ally of his former ad- versaries. We have no doubt that Mr. Mc_Ca.rthy's change of base was a predis- _posing cause toward the change which Mr. Cook has now made. As to the grave charge. that Mr. Cook was offered a. Sen- atorship on payment of $10,000, it has been squarely denied by Sir Wilfrid Laurier. Mr. Cook’s published statement _ is that he was offered a Senatorship, for which he had applied, but declined it as "the price was too great.” It remains to be seen what evidence can he offered in support oflthe charge.. As party favors go Mr. Cook would have been entitled to a szrvices, and therefore could hardly l:e 'asked to obtain it by a criminal sale and purchase. ‘ _ i .-é--_¢-i- . _ 1| Qllfy " "° ‘ ~ '~ L f==.-.- -ssc.-r~»~‘<.-2-u€§1="~'~‘-f.-~.-s » .-. _.1 ~ f _ ._ ._ ,:__ ..`. _ _ _ _ ___ _____,._ _ _ _ _ ‘ have no religion but are hostile to it.
