Inhuman ‘lreatment of a Child. We learn from the Quotidien of Levis that on Tuesday evening a number of respectable people, residents of Levis, complained tothe police of the in- human treatment of a young child bya mar and woman who had her in charge. The poli e arrested the parties com lained of, who gave theirname as Maurice Chaput and Etta Chaput, and claiming that they were man and wife, and that they were married at Moncton N.B On the child being examined, black marks were found on its little body and neck. The child, who is only about two or three years of taken charge of by the good Sisters of Charity, and he inhuman couple remanded until yesterday morn- ing, when they were brought before His Honor Judge Chauveau. They denied having treated the child cruelly and claimed to have purchased it for $2 at Campbeliton,N. B. On the accused agreeing to relinquish all claims on the child they were with a severe reprimand and caution discharg- ed, promising to leave the town im mediately. The accused were travel- ling around the country, gipsy fashion, he being an acrobatand his supposed wife telling fortunes; meantime the poor little baby was compelled to act the contortionist. —Quebec Chronicle: -_- The Duke of Wellington’s Last Words. When the Duke was sick, the last thing ne took, was a little tea. On his servants handing it tohimin a saucer, and asking if he would have it, the Duke replied, “Yes if you pleage.” These were his last words. How much kindness and courtesy is expressed by them! He who had commanded the greatest armies in Europe, and had long used the throneof authority, did not despise or overlook the small court- esies of life. Ah, how many boys do! What a rude tone ofcommand they often use to their little brothers and sisters, and sometimes to their mothers! This isil~bred and unchristian, and shows a course nature and a hard heart. In all your home talk, remember “If you please.”” Among yeur playmates don’t torget “Ifyou please.” To all who wait upon you and serve, you be- lieve that “If you please” will make you better served thanall the cross or ordering words in the whole dietionary- Don’t forget three little words—‘‘If you please.” Life is made up, not of great sacrifices or duties, but of little things, of which smiles and kindness and small obligations. given habitually, are what Win and preserve the heart and secure the comfort. _ eee Mr. Angus, Mr, Van Horne, and Mr. | Egan, returned from the end of the! track of the Canadian Pacific Railway last week, The line is now built to a point seventy-five miles beyond Calgary at the foot of the Rocky Mountains. It is vstimated that during the present sea- ton 564 miles of road will be construc- ted. By the end of this month the grad- ing will have been completed to the summit of the mouatains, and about two weeks later trains will be running to that point. The total number of miles completed to date in 1,905 and the number under construction 984. The Manitoba South—-western division will probably be carried to Whitewater lake next season. Surveyors have already been seat in to that region. _ AL A pm Prince 3ismarck’s dog, who estab- lished for himself a rather doubtful reputation by nearly killing Prince Gortschakoff at the Berlin Congress, has been at one of his pranks again. This time the too free use of his teeth did not result in the same portentous consequences as his former loss of temper would have done, although death ensued. The famous Reichshund attacked and killed the dog of a Gastein householder. Bismarck, who wit- nessed the scene, punished his dog severely, and after afew days called on the owner of the dead dog, apologised for the savagery of the Reichshund, end promised a new and better speci- men in placeof the slain hound. It would be curious if the dog of the Gastein householder turned out to be a dog of a French breed. —- we - Special Notices. 2000 yds. Remnants, in Prints and Canton Fiannels, at J.
