Fie See * 148 USBSh Ay. ‘ur SruTrerer.—During the revolutionary, war, «nen drafts were made from the militia to recruit the egntinental army, a certain captain gave liberty to the »nea who were drafted from his company to make their oujections if they had any, against going into the ser- vice; accordingly one of them who bad an impediment in his speech came forward and made his bow, * What '3 your objection 2 said the captain. *f ca-ca-can’t go,’ xaswered the man, because 1 st-st-stutter. * Stutler? says the captain, ‘you don’t go there to talk but to fight. - Ave, but they'll p-p-put me on g-g-guard, and a man may go ha-ha-halfa mile before I can say wh-wh wh who woes there?” ‘Oh that 1s no objection, for they will mace some sentry with you; he can challenge and you ean fire.” * Well b-b-but l may be taken and run through se g-g-guts, before [ can ery gu-qu-qu-quarter ?’ This _aat plea prevailed and the captain, laughing heartily, dismissed him, We have just seen a description ofa beautiful emble- matic dance, which was produced for the first time at the iate ball of the ‘Turkish Ambassador in Paris, ‘The name of this néw dence is that of the Months; it seems to have excited great admiration. It was danced by twelve ladies and gentlemen who had prepared them- selves for the occasion. Monsieur A— danced January with Mademoiselle B— who danced April. January was dressed as a prince palatine and wrapped in asable. April wore a lilac crape dress with two skirts, the upper one looped up ata short spaces by bunches of lilacs; on her head she wore a wreath of violets. February wore a black velvet doublet slashed with flames, coloured gauze, cut in such a way as to represent flames, and on his breast the arms of the city of Havre, the Salamander which lives in the fire. His lady was May,a lovely young girl with a dress which seemed made entirely of butterflies’ wings, and whose fair forehead was covered with a wreth of thornless roses. March wore the dress of a farmer with a plough and rake embroidered on his beeast, and he danced with June, whose green silk dress was trimmed with moss roges and little bunches of Tremain, James Anderson, Henry Stamper, Hewde- strawberries. ‘The other dresses were equally beautiful and ingenious. September was dressed as a hunter with his game bag at his side. August was very beau- tifui asa young vine dresser, with her white dress trummed with bunches sf grapes, and her head wreathed with vine leaves. The general effect of the quadrille was charming, and the dancers were forced to keep on ‘heir feet all night to satisfy the admiration of the spec- tators, A Nozsrie Horse.—Grant Thorburn says :—* I} once saw a horse in the neighbourhood of New York, drag- ing a load of coal, (twelve hundred weight,) in a cart. ‘(he land was very narrow—the driver, some distance behind, was conversing with a neighbour. The horse, ana slow walk, came uptoa child, sitting on his hind quarters in the middle of the road, gathering up the aust with his little hands, and making ‘ mountains out of mole hills.’ The horse stopped—he smelt the child —ihere was no room to turn off. With his thick lips ,@ gathered the frock between his teeth, lifted the child, aid him gently outside the wheel track, and ‘ went on lis way rejoicing,’ and well he might rejoice—he had done a noble deed.” “Yon're rubbing him down, eh ?” as the man said to a chap who was cleaning the mud from a brother toper’s coat. “ Not exactly,” he replied, * merely scraping an icjuaintance.” Insects generally must live a jovial life. Think of ‘vory or pearl, with pillars of silver and capitals of gold, a. inhaling such a perfume as never arose from human censer. Fancy, again, the fun of tucking yourselves uo for the night in the folds of a rose, rocked to sleep by the gentle sighs of summer air, nothing to do when you wake but to wash yourself ina dew-drop, and fall to red eat your bed-clothes, A Rivat ro Carirrornia.—A letter from Paris says, » the Province of Leon, Spain, the richest gold has been discovered. All the inhabitants of Grenada have ‘eft the city for the country ; and the sands of the river Youro, as well as those sround the city, are filled with tue precious mineral. The monomania of gold digging ix general now in Spain; 3,000 men were already en- gaged in washing, digging, and fighting for the acqui- s tion of those unexpected riches. A ‘arge’ tunnel is about to be cut through the Alps! i: will pass through the heart of Mount Genevre, will be seven English miles long, 19 feet high, and 25 wide, costing 21,000,000 frances. The Island of Japan is said to be the only country where a change in the fashion of dress has not occnrr- ed during a period of two thousand. five hundred years. All individuals from the highest to the lowest, in that kingdom, wear the bata, a species of wide trock or gown, and the only difference is in the material and in the number worn, some ofthe richer class wearing as wany as 25 und more, of various colours and exceed- giv light texture. Sir Boyle Roche rose one day in the Trish House of Commons and remarked :-—Mr. Speaker, the progress of ‘ye tunes is such, that little children, who can neither v alk nor talk, may be seen running about the streets, aursing their Maker. ‘There is resident in Edinburgh, a lady in possession af ali he: mental faculties, whese brother by the eame | neta died 122 years ago in the 14th year of his age. ae ee eae tome + Herage is upwards of 100 years.
