Now on his own, Barton hopes to make a one-mile dive in a sphere he has named the benthosoope. Construction of the sphere will be started next March, and it is ex- pacéed to be completed by February. 1 . winch used on Beebe's bathyslpher He said the benthosoope w more mobile and allow wider ex- wheels also will act as shock ab- sorbers in event of a collision with an under-water object. ‘Ihe ex lorer expects to make his first trias off the Bahamas, and then explore the sea bottom off Bermuda. Barton who served four years in the United States navy until recent discharge. photographed A- merican actions and landings in the Philippines and in New Guinea. Although hc drew little publicity after the Becbc dive in 1934, Bar- ton was actually the one who de- veloped and constructed the bath- ysphere and took the publicised under-water pictures of marine life. After that he commenced de- signing his bathoscopc, but private business and then the war pre- vented him going ahead with his lan pTall and soft-spoken, Barton be- lleveg there is a great world under the sea to be explored. and he hopes his promised one-mile dive will provide opportunities for minute examlnlations of as yet unknown sea life. He hopes to link up with various scientific institutes in the United States to aid in his work.
