ESTEEMED FPXCHANGES. Canadian Home Journal: A large part of the failures, the disappointments, the inferior work, the discontent and unrest, the poor thinking, the shallow reasoning, the Jack of kindly feelng and sympathetic action which affiict mankind is due to the Jack of nourishment afforded to the facul- tes. They are starved,—consequently feeble and inefficient. Many people plead the lack of time to enrich their minds, to stimulate the r powers, to feed their moral patures. As well might the bird with drooping wing and declinivg strength plead that he had co many fights to take m mid-air that he bad no time to pick the corn from the Sela or the fruit from the tree to sustain him in those fligbts. Moncton Times: About a year ago the Jeading liberals of P. E. Island were boast- ing of the enormous advanteges that were to accrue to the “tight litile island” by reason of the r being so fortunate as to have as powerful a minister ss Sir Louis Davies to representthem in the Cabinet. A $100,000 breakwater was to be built at Summerside. A million dollar bridge was to be construvted over the Hillsborough river at Charlottetown. Branch lines galore were to be built to Maur- ray Harbor and a half dozen other points, estimated to cost other nillions. host of engineers were engaged for months in making surveys and plane of these big works that Sir Louis assure’ the Island people would be carried outwithoutdelay. What has hap- pened? Ha» the“ Big Policeman” from Ontario clubbed Sir Louis’ big scheme out of court, as be is alleged to have done with Mr. Biair’s Canada Eestern? Our up street contem porary professes io be in close touch with Sir Louis. Perhaps he can gratify a large number of irquisitive people as to the position of Sir Louis’ long pro- mised objects ? — 3b Will Repair in Boston. Wasmineton. Lonvex, Aug. 23.—The Anglo-Egyptian re-conquest of the Sondan ia steadily approaching its culmination. Khartoum wil! be captured and Mahdism emashed within a month, but Englishmen have not yet reached the stage of excitement over what isone ofthe most remarkable and uninteruptedly successful military enter- prises in British history. Gen. Kitchner isthe youngest man of his rauk inthe British army. He bas made no mistakes, and now has a perfectly equipped army of 25,000 men of all arma 1,700 miles from starting point, and ready to deliver the last crushing blow upon the enemy. There bas been no fuss, and this fact has lulled foreign suspicion as to the aims of British policy in the Sou- dan. Ifthe French think about the matter atall they assume that Gen. Kitchner will clear out of the Soudan as soon as the Derviehes are finally defeated. The as- sumption is unfounded, whatever the British Government may have said a year or two ago. The intention now is to keep the Soudan and more. Its policy embraces the possibility—nay, the probabilitv— of war with Abyssinia, despite King Menelek’s newely found friends in Paris and St Petersburg. The purely British regiments wil! be gradually withdrawn from the Soudav, but Gen Kitchner's Egyptians, transformed by him from epiritless peasanis into real fighting men, and the Soudarese warriors, who have learned to worship their British officers, will remain to extend and complete t!¢@ scheme of conquest. General Kitchner’s flag, nominally Egyptian, will be taken to ihe borders of Uganda, theze to get the British flag now upheld by a handful of Englishmen thousands of miles from civilization. It is a scheme to stir the imagination, yet it was born in prosaic Downing Street. +e - Richness in Labrador. ——-— Hairax, Aug 23.—A big find of a valn- able mineral deposit is reported from Labrador coast. The fine was made by two men pamed McBain of this city, who went with Rey Mr Clay inthe schooner Cambridge in June on an exp'oring trip. They brought home samples of the miner- al, but were ignorant of its real velue at first, and were surprised to fiod that the mineral was white sapphire, which is large- ly used for manufac'uring purposes. It is scarce and it is worth a lot of moaey. Io appearance it reserables mica, and ir easi- ly broken. The fiod was near Hamilt n's inletonthe Labrador coast. MeBain in: tends to push the thing along, now that he knows the real thing. The stuffis said tobe deposited in large quantities, and a further search of fhe country wil) be made. _—_ OO oS —- --— A Murder Case. —_ New Car.isie, Aug. 24.—The trial of Theodule Poirier for the murder of Jerome Martin, has already created great interest. On the 3rd of April last, Theodule Poir- ier was spending the evenlogat a Mr. Doricn’s in the village of St. Alexis, Jerome Martin wasst Mr. Gallani’s. The two residences are not far from each other. Thetwo visitcra were bitter enemics and the one had decided to meet the other that night and have it out. They met on the road soon after 10 o’clock. Both Poirier and Martin, it is said, were in love with Miss Dorion. They wanted to settle it at once for all that one or the other should drop out. They qaarrelled for some time, vhen finally Martin took off his coat to fight. Poirier insmediately took bis jack~knife and struck Martin in the throat severing the jugular vein. Martin died ina few moments. People here sympathize greatly with the prisoner. He is a fine fellow, they say, and must have been tem- porarly insane end did not know what he was doing. High-rrade Ar. Carro, Aug. 23.—The accuracy of the information which the Sirdar obtains re~ specting the movements of the Khalifa has | enabled him to make bis dispositions for tbe present advance on Khar‘oum with the utmost precision. Prior to the fall of Berber the Intelli- gence Departmeat bad frequently much difficulty in judging of the opposition that was likely th be metto the advance, but since then their work bas been much sim plified mercebarts were found there who had cor- respondents in Khar oum. They were left unmoiested on the undersianding that they furvished a!! the information they obtained ‘othe Egyptian forces. Fully appreciating the direction in which their interests ley, they bave faithfully kept to their share of the bargain. On the other hand, they have doubtless told, probably with some embellishment, the preparations which were being mede for the advance on Khbar- toun. The result has been to bring over many waverers to our side, and there in no doubt that the Madhi is begioning to find himself ina tight place. There is little prot - ability that there will be any resistance of a serious character before Khartouao is reached, and co doabt that the defeat of th Khalifa there wil! mean the final break-up of his power. lo conversation with Colone] Wingate, Mahmoud, Chalifa’s general, who was cap- tured at the battle of Atbars, said that at ‘the mosque at Omdurman there are forty~ seven rowsof fighting men, with 1,500 warriors ineach row. The latest intelligence from Omdurman leaves little doubt that the Khalifa intends to resist to the last. His bodyguard, his own tribesmen, and blacks will probably fight desperately, but all the rest of the Soudan would. oo a Pain in the Back Being troubled off and on with pains in my vack, cv used bv constipation, I tried severay ki’ ds of pitts I hadseen advertised, and to put the truthin a nut shell, Dr Chase’s Kid- nev Liver Pllls are the only will that haye proved effectual in my case I can heartily recommend them.
