Daily Gxaniiner JUNE 25, & f. } eh 1885 Examination ae St. Dunstan's College. Tue yearly examination of St. Dau stan’s College place yesterday. There was a large nember of spectators present, which shows the deep interest taken in that institution of learning. His Lordship Bishop McIntyre, the Lieut. Governor and Lady, Rev. James MeDonald, Rev. A. J. Melntyre. Rev. 1. tenK in D. J. Gillis. Father Chaisson, Father Grant, Father Gallant, Father Bourke, Judge Reddin, J. A. MeDonnell. Hsq.,P. Blake. Esq..M P.P.,T. Foley, Esq., ofthe Savings Bank and member of the City School Board; D. Montgomery,Ksq., Superintendent of Education; E. Roche, Legislative Librarian, and the pareats of several of the pupils. A number ef ladies honored the occasion, with their presence, among whom we observed Mrs. Sullivan, Mrs. Judge Reddin, Mrs. Walker, Mrs. McDonald Miss Pope, Miss Caven, and many others whose names we don’t recollect. The pupils were examined in Latin, Greek, French, Euclid, Plain Trigonometry, Algebra, Arithmetic Geography, History, Grammar, etc., etc. The examination of the different classes was conducted by His Lordship, the Bishop, Rev. Angus McDonald, for- merly Rector of St. Danstan’s, Meesrs. wv . iMsq, Foley, Montgomery and_ Roche. The thoroughness shown by the pupils in their studies as well as the order and decorum observed ail through the examination, reflected the hightest credit on the Rector, Rev. C. J. McDonald and his highly competent staff of Pro- fessors. The high s‘ate of efficiency in which the Institution was found, was the subject of general comment among the intelligent visitors present, aud cannot fail to lead to a large increase in the attendance at the College next year. After the distribution of the prizes by Mrs. McDonald, wife of the Lieut.-Goveruvor, His Lordship Bishop Melotyre delivered a brief address to the pupils, admirably suited, as all His Lordship’s utterances are, to the occa- sion. Short speeches complimentary to the Professors and pupils were made by the Lieat.-Governor, Messrs. Roche and Montgomery. Taking the examina- tion on the whole, it revived recollections of the palmiest days of St.’ Dunstan’s. Where uearly all the classes acquitted themselves so creditably, it would be invidious to make distinctions; but one thing we feel bound to say that the senior Geometry class is entitled to special praisee The manner in which they handled some of the most difficult pro- blems in the Fifth and Sixth Books of Euclid, would have done uo discredit to Cambridge Wranglers. WEST KENT STREET SCHOOL. The neat flower garden in frout of West Kent Street School at once gives the visitor a favorable impression, which, heightened by theclear, bright rooms and walls, withont a mark or scratch. It is evident at once that the teachers are persons of good ta:te and care, and that wathetics are not, as in too many schools, entirely forgotten in the educa- tion of the youth in attendance. The visitors included Liis Honor, the Lieutenant-Goveruor and Mrs. MeDonald, Rev. J M. McLeod and Miss McLeod, J. D. Mason, Esq., and Miss Mason, W. E. Dawson, Thomas Handra- han, Donald Farquharson, Archibald Kennedy, A. B. McDonald, John Ings, now or lately of the Board of School Trustees, Hon. The enter- tainment at the close was very pleasing, the singing, readiug, etc., being good without exception. His Honor the HH DAILY moe 1 Lieut. AN arrangement has been patched up under which the Conservatives will hold office until an appeal is had to the people. The position in which Salisbury was placed by the hasty action of his Party and the Parnellites, was, and is most embarrassing. He could only assume the reins of power when his opponents agreed to refrain from oppos- ing. Gladstone deserves credit of having, without difficulty, escaped from a very trying and unenviable position ; and the prospects seem now to be that besides forcing the Conservatives to pass the most important of the Bills his Govern- ment had introduced, he will, if he remains in politics, return to power after the general election, with a re-constructed and united Party at his back. —-—_—- © <P> 2 -— The Volunteer Aid Fund. Tue statement published in Tur Ex- AMINER to-day will be satisfactory to all concerned—even to the correspondent who censured Mr. FitzGerald. Mr. FitzGerald, indeed, deserves very great credit for the part he has taken in the matter. The concert was given at his suggestion, aud was a financial success by reason, largely, of the energetic measures he took as Chairman of the Committee; while the proceeds were re- scued from an absconding treasurer by his instrumentality. The earnest and generous public spirit Mr. FitzGerald has displayed in this matter, as well as the interest he hag showa in several enterprises for the good of the city, deserye commendation and not censure, and the good reputation he has earned as a careful, rompt and fearless Stipendiary Magistrate, will be enhanced by reason of the efforts, oustide the limits of his official duty, which he has put forth in behaif of the city. Bedeque. MOUNT STOWE SCHOOL EXAMINATION. The semi-annual examination of the above named school took place on Tuesday last, June 16th. There” were present besides the Trustees, a large number of parents and other visitors, all of whom where highly pleased with the eflicient state of the school, The Teacher, Mr. John McEachern, was highly complimenicd by all present for his diligence, punctuality, kindness and tact as a teacher, and freely admitted that the examination was the most gratifying that has ever taken place since it became a school. And asa proof of our appreciation of his services, a very liberal supplement was voted at the annual school meeting which took place immediately after, as an inducement to his accepting the situation for another year. It is but due to Mr. McHachern to say that wherever his services may be required, the energy and zeal displayed by him in the past may be taken ss a sure guarantee of his fidelity in the future. ; Several! valuable prizes were distributed a+ the close of the exatuination to the pupils nighest (or furthest) advanced in thelr respective classes as follows :— English—George 8.
