They note the fate of a conven- tion which was to have gathered leaders of industry from across Western Canada and the Western United States to Vancouver this week to discuss industrial science, especially as related to creation of new products and industries. The fourth Western Area De- velopment Conference sponsored by the Stanford Research Insti- tute of Menlo Park, Calif., later was cancelled because a mini- mum attendance could not be mustered. Organiters hoped there would be 300 businessmen here for the meeting but could not even get the minimum of 100. CUT DOWN EXPENSES W. C. Mainwaring and J. C. (AP)-—'l'o the strains of a solemn march, 650 Central High School seniors will file across the football field next week to receive their diplo mas. For the first time, one of them will be a Negro. His presence will represent in- tegration in Little Rock. U.S. troops and an expenditure of nearly $5,000.000 went into that accomplishment. The graduation exercise will unfold in the stadium where the 101st Airborne Infantry had field headquarters when it guarded the presence of nine Negroes at the school last fall. . Among subjects on the agenda were: New products for wood, the industrial outlook for rare metals, electronics in industry, the petro- chemical industry in westenn Can- ada nnd peaceful use of atomic energy. Manager Tom Cox of the Van- couver Convention Bureau says the cutback in convention expen- diture is evident in a decline in party-giving rather than in re- duced attendance. Delegates tend to arrive at the opening of bus- iness and leave as soon as it is finished, he said. Mr. Cox sums up the general trend as a move back to the ed- -ucational and business side of convention activities. .guardsmen loll about the school. To the delight of the guaurdsmen, their “baby-sitting" job will end May 29. when school closes for the summer. The big u'-°'-swered question is whether they, or men next fall to guarantee the safety of Negro students. MAY GET ANSWER A federal court judge may an- swer the question summarily when he rules on the school boards petition to have its grad- ual integration plan postponed un- til 1961. His ruling may come June 3. If the court holds that integra- tion — launched last fall with fights, tension and racial hatred— should proceed, the seven re. maining Negro students say they will go back.
