Mid East played the king. East thought for a moment, concluded that there was a good chance that his part- ner's lead had been a singleton (and that there was little chance to defeat the contract ii it wasn't). and forthwith led back a low diamond. South could have dis- carded a club. but lie played mvre sately by ruffing high, drawing two rounds o! trumps. and then leading the diamond queen throllih East for a ruffing finesse against. the marked ace. East tried some very clumsy deception by ducking. but South was absolutely sure how the cards lay, so he simply threw of! a club and a moment later could claim his slam. This was a case that demanded deception on East's part! That. player should have considered himself/fortunate tor two reasons -that’he had not bid diamonds. giving the show away, and that his partner's lead n! so low a diamond might well be read by declarer as a lead from the kin!- To further this impression, East's first play should have been the diamond ace, most certainly not the king! Then it he led back a low diamond, South would have to make an extremely lucky guess. and it is very doubtful that he would do so. 1t would not seem at all unlikely to him that West. had the diamond king. so South would rulf. draw trumps, and then lead the diamond queen through to give East another_ chance to cover if he had the king. East, however. should quickly play low. and again South would probably ruff. South would rather try for the heart finesse to give him n club discard than to play for an -led between two great rocks too j- f ~ ttCns Old Grizzly Bear was iceling out oi sorts reward. Old Grizzly Best, who really wasn't old at all but was called so because_he was so big. had seen Johnny Chuck's moun- tain cousin. Whistler the Marmot, dive into his home down among the rocks and had tried to dig him out. With his great paws he had sent small stones and sand flying. He had pulled out what you and I would call rocks. Then the passage to Whistler’: home big to be pulled out or dug around. It was too small tor anyone bigger than Whistler to pass through. That is when Old Grizzly began to grumble and growl and ieel out o! sorts generally. It didn't make him feel any better when Whistler whistled at him from iarther up the slope. He had a backdoor to his home near there. He was whistling at the big Bear in the most provoking manlier. When Old Grizzly looked up to snarl a threat he saw something that made him forget that threat. He forgot to snarl. He no longer grumbled or growled. He forgot his hard work for nothing. He forgot that provoking Marmot whistling at him. The top o! that rocky slope was a funny sight. Anyway it: would have seemed iiinny to you and me. Three Mountain Goats in white coats xvére sitting up Bear fashion. I suspect that if he didn't grin he almost did, but not because that was a funny sight to him, It wasn't. Goats sitting up that. way had been a familiar sight: to him as long as he could remember. But one o! those three was a very small Goat. a. kid, and just the thought o! tender kid for dinner was enough to make any Bear grin. "Billy and Nanny Sureioot. I knew they were living somewhere around here, but. Nanny was alone the last time I saw her, and that was only a short time ago. That. kid can't be many days old,“ thought Old Grizzly as he looked up at them. He knew that they saw him. They couldn't very well help see- lng hlni for he was right out in plain sight. Even where there are trees and bushes it. isn't easy tor one as big as Old Grizzly to keep out of sight. So he pretended to take no interest in them and be- gan wandering about 1n his usual manner when looking tor some- thing to eat. He would pull over a big stone here and dig a little there. All the time he kept watch of those Goats without seeming to. "No use o! even thinking oi try- ing to catch Billy and Nanny. A long time ago l learned how use- less that is. They are too quick for me, and they go places where I can't follow. But that kid isn't cld enough to run hard or tar. Probably he doesn't know enough yet to be alriiid. Of course the others will warn him, but he is so young that he may not have learned to mind promptly. He is worth trying for. Anything worth having is ‘worth trying for. and I don't know of anything more worth having than a dinner of n tender young kid like that one I’ni glad I didn't get that Marmot. Mai-mot is good eating but Goat ls better. I'll see ii I can't get near enough to that youngster and scare him so he can't. run," thought Old Grizzly. He licked his lips hungrily as he wandered this way and that. but all the time drew nearer to where the three Goats now st00d.
