July l0—A new Can- ‘ ' " adian record over a mile track was set today as Jack Orr, a frec- legged pacer owned by G. White. ‘ Lexington, Ky, and driven by Tom Berry, Lexington, won the feature event of the second day's racing of the Grand Circuit at ally By. For the fourth straight time this year Perc Mclinnls’ stars showed their superiority over the Holy Name Club Falcons when they won last night's exhibition game in honor of Whackey McEachern by a 7-4 score. But in winning the Stars had to be on their best be- haviour and once again these two rivals displayed a brand of ball that was pleasing to watch. Away to a shaky start the Fal- cons were trailing 2-0 at the end of the first frame, two errors, a base on balls and a hit accounting for the damage. Scoring was void from then until the fifth and then the winners gamered their third counter to make it 3-0. Ernie Rob- in replaced Ayers in the sixth but after reducing the Stars in order in said frame ran into trouble in the seventh. anerror, wild throw and three successive hits enabling the Stars to run the count to ‘7-0 and. from the manner in which they were performing the lead seemed more than sufficient. Behind the brilliant hurling of Bruce McCallum the Falcons had a one hit shutout staring them in the face at the start of the ninth, but they rallied then and for a while threatened to overcome the lead. A hit, error and hit batsman loaded the sacks and then another error saw two runs cross the plate. Bearing down hard, McCallum whiffed the next two batters but Chevie Acorn came through with a single to acwunt for two more runs. The next hitter however grounded out to retire the side. lt was "Whackey" McEachern flight and the guest of honour turned in a sparkling performance, fielding faultlessly while driving in three runs at the plate. During the 881118 “Whackey” was presented with a rememb lulvc gift from the 9010139151118 teams to which he re- plied feelingly. It was his last ap- pearance in a local uniform and needless to say Whackey received a big hand from the fans in at» tendance, Bruce McCallum, Stars’ young ‘we. gave a brilliant display on the mound last evening. For six in- nings he seemed well on the way to s. perfect game. During this time only one man had reached first base, and this was on an er- ror. In the seventh however, Wilf more hits ss he weakened mentarily. George Ayers, starting for the Falcons. was also good.
