DOMINION PARLIAMENT. House of Commons. Laurier’s Objection to Mr, Abbott Met by Sir John Thompson, Nir John Offered the Leadership. oo Ortawa, June 23. In the House of Commons yeaterday, on the order of the day being called, Mr, Lavrier moved an adjournment in order to discuss the policy of the Government. He complained that by the election of Mr. Abbott aa Premier the Canadian Pacifi- Kailway had been given a preponderancy «{ intiuence in the councils of the nation. Sir John Thompson replied that Mr, Abbott's connection with the ministry wae nothing new. For about four years he had been Leader of the Government in the Senate, to the complete satisfaction of that —_ who had nothing but compliments for him the other day when he became Premier. Sir Joho Thompson ridiculed Mr. Laurier for quoting the Montreal Her.|d’s interview with Hon Mr. Chapleau, after Chapleau had publicly repudiated it. Sir John Tnompson said moreover that the Governor-General had called upon him to form an administration ; but he had de- clined because he considered that the five or six years he had spentia Federal puli- tics had net sufticiently qualified him and he declined in favor of an older and moreex- perienced man who had been forty years in ublic life. Any statement of the press that e had been passed over because of his religion, or that he had attemptel and failed to secure the support of the Conserva- tive party, was untrue. Neither was any compact made or required that any of the ministry should retire at the soa of the session to allow of a re-arrangement. Cartwright complimented Thompson, but denounced the retention of Langevin in the Cabinet, and deplored the influence of the maritime provinces in the Cabinet. Davies pointed to the Catholic Liberal with pride, and taunted the Conservatives with bigotry and illiberalism in kicking agiinst Thompson. Curran pointed to Davies as the only man in Prince E:iward Island who had attempted to kal an exclusively Protestant government. He instanced the liberaliem of the Davies government and of the pre- sent M:nitoba government when the con- acience of Catholics were concerned. On division, Lanrier’s motion was defeated by one hundred and three to eighty-three. Twenty-two membere were paired. Three Conservatives were absent, and two Coneer- vative seats, Kingston and Riebiliea, un- represented. Tarte, Joncas, and other loose French fish, voted with the opposition. British Parliament. Loxpon, June 23. Lord Denman gave notice yesterday, in the House of Lords, that he will move for the rejection of the Irish Land Bill.
