This financial uncertainty in Canadian Agriculture has always throttled production. Farmers have not got the money to plow back into their business and in many cases they would be foolish to plow it back if they did have it. They do not have the finances or op- portunity to turn to modern scien- tific methoda that they have in Britain. British farmers take good care of their soil and it is right that they should. In a country like Canada where our problems are mostly surpluses and where our agricultural production is so large that we don't know what to do with it. the sinking of money into our soils to further increase production is of doubtful value. rt, 15 all very well for govern- ment officials and others to talk about a farmer's responsibility to posterity in improving his soil fertility but a farmer's first re- sponsibility is to himself in Can- ada as in Britain. His passing is deeply regretted by the whole Belfast district, particu- larly the Flat River Community where he lived all his '15 years in the old home of his father and grandfaiher. Conclusion In concluding this report, I should like to pay tribute to the Nuffield Foudatlon of Great Bri- tain by whose generosity my trip in 1063 was made possible. During the summer I associated while in London with Nuifieid scholars from the other British Dominlons and I firmly believe" that the Nuffield Foundation through its scholarships is doing much '0 draw together the various parts of the Commonwealth with bonds of understanding and good-will. I am sure that I personally. as a result of my summer in Britain and as a result of my Scottish ancestry. will always do all in my power to maintain and improve the good relations that now exist between Canada and the other countries of the Commonwealth. This was a particularly good year to go to Britain because it was coronation year and I feel sure that anybody who had a sent along the route will not soon for- get the ancient color and pag- eantry that was so well displayed on June 2nd. I think that most visitors to Britain this summer were agreeably surprised by the truly wonderful economic re- covery being made by the British people. We were glad to Join with them in the spirit of celebration that everyone felt at the gradual disappearance of rationing after fourteen years of shortages. Fin- ally.
