Special Meeting Of Cily Council At a special meeting of the City Council called to consider the pur- chase of a road grader and scarl- lier, His Worship Mayor Stewart and seven of the Councillors were present. He was not in favor of the purchase. several councillors en- terecl into the discussion and while .hey were not generally in favor of .he purchase of a used machine. it was pointed out that a machine was needed immediately and the value of one of the type proposed was $20,000 with snow plow at- cached. when the vote was taken all Councillors present gave their con- sent to the purchase. Coun. A. Gormley introduced a motion calling for the installation of two sets of traffic lights by the Redmond Electric Company to be installed at the corners of Queen and Euston Streets, and Prince and Grafton Streets. This company installed the first traffic lights placed in the City and since that time is has been the practice to have the same firm install any ad- ciltlonal lights. It is the duty of the contractor to service thelighfs after they are put into operation. Councillor MacDonald the motion on the grounds that the Redmond Electric Company, was no longer a city firm. Their business is now located outside the limits. He also recalled a previous resolution in which it was unani- mously agreed that in all cases contracts would be given to city firms who were able to do the work. Councillor MacDonald felt that are paying high taxes to be ignor- ed when such work was to be contracted for. Mayor Stewart reminded the Council that in allowing outside fimis work within the city. they were leaving themselves open to trouble on future occasions. The resolution carried 4-3.
