How's she goin’ wha? This, thesecond installment of Biohazard, will update: people on the past weekand inform them about the coming weeks. Last week was a good one for memberships, with over seventy of them being sold on Wednes- day alone which brings the total membership to bout eighty, already more than were members ast year. The barbecue was popular and the arty in Riverdale had more “refreshments” at it than everyone could drink , and being as ccomadations were provided there wasn’t one case of drinking and driving. But all that is old news and who the hell cares what happened last week anyway? Either you were there and know what a good time it was or you weren't and really don’t givea damn. This weekend (Fri, Sat, and Sun) there Willbea sustainable living fair in Fredericton, N.B in which you will have the opprotunity to learn how to live off the land with minimum environ- mental impact. Transportation back and forth will be provided and there will be some great parties at night. The trip (not including food) should cost about $20.00 per person. Anyone interested can sign up on the sheet in the iology Club lounge. NOTE ON THE ENGINEERS ome of you might be missing the column View rom the’ T op which was printed last year in this aper by the engineers. The reason for its bsence is that the person who wrote this column has since graduated and left the univer- ity. The current executive of the Engineering ociety has informed me that the column will sume as soon as they can find another person nthe department capable of reading and writ- ng. NVIROFACT housands of dollars are spent every year to try ° save the endangered Piping Plover. Millions "e spent in an effort to eliminate mosquitoes nd blackflies. Getting rid of mosquitoes and lackflies is good and losing the the Piping Plover S bad, right? Not neccessarily. If the Piping plover ‘re to disappear tomorrow the most damag- "8 effect it would have would be on the °nsciences and egos of humans. The Piping °ver is relatively insignificant in the grand "vironmental scheme. The disappearance of ®mosquito would be an environmental disas- ter, causing thousands of species of animals that depend on mosquitos asa food sourceto starve to death. This would include many fish, bats, and birds that are in turn food for larger mammals and birds. This could mean that the extinction of the mosquito could eventually lead to the extinction of animals that depend on the mos- quito for food. Think about that the next time you swat one and wish all the little bastards would disappear. UPCOMING EVENTS Sept. 17 -- 19 -- Sustainable Living Fair in Fredericton.
