A Prince County Viewpoint by "ll" weacomz. me cureret Summersidc bids the Maritime fire chiefs welcome this week, The grocer. the ice man. the but- cher call quite often at our doors and we welcome their visits as es- seniial to the smooth and oven flow of daily living. The fire- man may never call. or may call but once in a lifetime. He makes his visit only at a time of crisis, and we are then depending on his cool efficiency for our continued security and happiness. He 'is for a few brief critical minutes or hours the most important per- son in our lives; the man of the flaming hour. as it were. if he and his mates are well organized, we can expect expert service that will reduce our losses to a mini- mum. Firemenls conventions are held for the purpose of bettering their organization and methods, and should therefore receive the en-- dorsement and encouragement of us all. It will not be necessary nor advisable to set fires, or even ring in false alarmsito show these visitors we believe in them and the work they do for a commun- ity. But as many of us as are in a position to do so should tender to these visitors the hospitality of our town, and do any kind- nesses or couriesies which lay in our power. 0 0 Almost before Bruce Hutchin- son's defence of our Government's "four-wheel brakes" fight against inflation in Maclean's Magazine of July 15 hit the streets, the news of May's large boost in the cost- of-llving index threw question and doubt on the light itself, and his attempt to justify it. "In March," Hutchinson says, "the Canadian cost-of-living in- dex rose 2.1 points, less than half of the (.5 point rise in February. In April the rise is ,2 points . . . The brakes were apparently work- ing. The Government will be sur- prised and disappointed if prices show any serious increase during the rest of the summer. It has, or thinks it has, a breathing spell in the inflationary spiral." Immediately we learn that the cost-of-living index for May showed an increase larger than that for March! It is evident that the Government just thought it had a "breathing spell in he in- flationary spiral." We believe in British justice. however, and gov- ernments, like individuals. must have a fair trial. So let's wait and see, but let's not forget that inflation can be a very serious threat to our way of life. it is a dictatorship of shrinking dollars and, if allowed to continue, can hold us in bondage as crippling to the spirit as that imposed by Stalin and his gang.
