James Stevenson, of the Washington Geological Survey, has reported the discovery of several more ruined caves and cliff cities. The most remarkable one isa village of sixty-five under- grouod dwellings near the summit of a foot bill in the San Juan re- Arizona. The dwellings voleanic region of They had no interior communication) beneath the surface and were accessible | by means of square holes leading from the surface by a vertical shaft to the floor of the main room of the dwelling, foot-rests forming a ladder. Considerable debris was found in these ancient dwellings, an examination of which led to the discovery of many curios illustrating some of the sociai and domestic customs of the extinet race. Stone mauls and axes, the imple- ments used in excavating the dwellings; pottery bearing a great variety of or- namentation; bone awls and needles of delicate workmanship; the metate, or family-grindiog stone, for grain, its well-worn surtace indicating long use ; shell and obsedian ornaments and im- plements of w vod were among the trophies. There were sigas ef inter- communication between this village and a cliff city some fifteen miles distant, alsoa pew discovery, which the con- temporancous inhabitancy of the two. This city or rather cluster of villages occupied the sides of a canyon, which had been christaned Walnut Canyon. Nothing indicating the use of metallic tools of any description was discovered. | The surface of the wood of which the whirl was formed had apparently been charred and then ground downto the required size and shape by rubbing it upen sandstonoe—a shaft of reed simi- lar to bamboo, a species entirely un- known in that region. Alive in Her Coffin. THE FUNERAL SERVICES ENDED AND THE UNDERTAKER ABOUT TO CLOSE THE LID. Mrs. Lucinda Neeley of Jeffersonville, Ind., a member of the Order of Knights and Ladies of Honor, and prominent in religious, charitable, and social cireles, was taken very suddenly ill on Thurs- day night, and ia twe hours was _ pro- nounced dead. Heart diseuse, hastened by acute asthma, was assigned as the cause, Jn account ef the suddenness of herdeath the funeral was postponed until Monday morning. A large num- ber of persons, attracted by the promin- ence of Mrs. Neeley, and in part by the fact that she was to be buried with the honors of the society of which she was amember, were present. After the fuueral sermon the knights and ladies went through their recital for the dead. Then the sorrowing friends took their last look and the undertaker was about to replace the lid on the coffin, when a giance at the eorpse caused him to draw back with an exclamation. The friends were summoned, and, after a hasty con- sulation around the coffin, the preacher said: “My friends, the funeral of Mrs. Neeley will proceed no further, as it is thought she is still alive. The audience is dismissed . The undertaker says that-as he was about to close the lidof the coffin he noticed a flush on the cheeks of the corpse, and saw a mevement of the body as a person in a desperate struggle tor life. The burial has been seetpeen in- defiuitely, and every effort will be made to bring Mrs, Neely out of her supposed trance. CURRENT NOTSS. Robert Harris, of New York,a dir- ector of the Northern Pacific and one of the vice-presidents of the Erie, has been elected to sueceed Mr. Villard as presi— dent. Mr. Harris was formerly presi- dent of ‘the Chicago, Burlington & Quiney. At Jeffersonville, Ind., preparations were inade to bury Mrs. Lucinda Neely, on Monday, when appearances of life were discovered, and the body was removed from the casket and at last accounts efforts were being made to bring her out of the supposed trace. The wearing of mackintoshes is said to be a fruitful cause of colds. The mac- kintosh prevents exterior wittiog, but the clothing uader it becomes saturated with moisture from the tody, which evaporates when the garment is remov- ed. The Lancet says that when onee the mackintosh has been put on it should not be removed until the wearer is in a position to change his clothing. Accordiog to Mr. Joseph Hatton, “he is too de- | voted a promoter of art, too generous a man, tobe very rich. He is simple in his tastes and habits, but enjoys terra- pin, canvas-back duck, and a good cigar, and when a hotel proprietor recently tried to palm offen bim an ordinary duck for his favorite dish it made him furious,” Efforts are being made to secure the attendance of the British team at the next competition of the Dominion Rifle Association. A letter has been received from the captain of a Scottish team who speaks highly of the idea as well as the pleasure it should give to him and his Scottish friends to visit Ottawa, He states that in bis opinion ifa formal in- vitation were extended by the Domivion Rifle Association to he tWar Office it is very likely tha! it would be accepted and a small grant would be given for this purpeses. Dartmouth, N.S., has an elopement sensation. The man in the case is nam- ed Fraser Allan, a three months wid- ower. Hehad been recently working in New Glasgow, from which place he, it is alleged, wrote te his enamorata for the necessary tunds to purchase certan articles of clothing and pay his passage. The woman is Mrs Guy, whose husband was sentenced five years imprisonment at Dorchester forstealing money from the Halifax banking company. She has two children, and it is said had a con- derable amount of cash. They travelled westward by train ov Wednesday. A new device for prompting elop- ments has been given to the world by a young Cincinnati girl, lately.Miss Lriska Haverfteld, now Mrs. W. P. Baird, of Fayetteville, Ten. In spite of a vigil- gant mother, she was married to the man of her choice several weeks ago, the license having been readily ob- tained, although she was under the pre- seribed age. When asked how she managed it she replied that her witness eonscientiously swore that she was “over 18,” that number having been placed on the soles ot her boots for the special purpose.
