THE WINTER STEAM ERS.
It is now over seven weeks since the
winter steamer Stanley was put out of
action so far as maintaining communica-
tiouwith the mainland is concerned. In
that time she has been carried forward
and backward by the winds and tides in
the ieeheia in which .he is impacted and
has gradually been carried about lil)
first stuck fast.` Yesterday shewasre-
ported about five miles oil’ the coast of
Arisaig and apparently still fast in the
ice and helpless-. Her coal supply must
be also short, and ln the extreme cold
weather recently prevalent it will require
a quite large daily consumption to pro-
vide the necessary heat without the use
of any for purposes of navigation.
For flve or six days piet the Minto' hae-
also been oiiher regular duty of plying
between Georgetown and Picton, having
gone to the rescue of the Stanley. It will
be observed that the latter steamer lnher
hupien anrtto the eastward hu emma
the Minto’s regular route, and is .now
farther out of reach than at any time dur-
ing a week past. Meanwhile tho' Minto
is also fast in the ice and has been so for
some days. What the outcome may be
it is hard to predict. It is to be hoped and
expected that the Minto will get free
within a few days, although the ice-pack
about her is said to be very heavy, and
the northwest wind of yesterday would
not afford much, if any relist. As for the
