bers in favor of reciprocity has been
going on for weeks past in different
parts of New Brunswick, Ontario and
the West. If a two-months adjourn-
ment of Parliament shall take place
from a fortnight hence it is under-
stood that a sc-ries of meetings will
be held throughout the Dominion
both for and against the trade agree-
ment, and also in preparation for a
possible general election.
An Ottawa telegram states that
many of the Quebec members are dis-
posed to insist that instead of Par-
liament adjourning from May 23 for
two months, it shall ‘be formally pro-
rogued so that they may receive a
double indemnity for two sessions ln-
stead of one. Should this audacious
proposal be entertained it would in-
volve an additional outlay for in-
demnity of $750,000 for the Commons
and Senate. -
SABBATH REST FOIt_ WOMEN.
Mr. Editor:-My object in writing
this is to show up some abuses that
exist at the present time and to of-
fer some suggestions as to how the
overworked women of our land may
secure their Sabbath rest of w-bich
they are so frequently robbed by the
customs and conventions of the pres-
ent day. Now that the great feast
day 'commonly called Easter is passed
a word regarding it may not be
aiiiiss. The word Easter which is of
heathen origin appears once in the
authorized version of the New Testa-
ment but in the revised version the
correct rendering, "passover," is giv-
en. It seems revoltiiig to me that a
day of such sacred associations
should be celebrated in the manner
that so frequently obtains in our
time. The women spent most of their
time preparing roast beef and mak-
ing plum pudding and have little or
no time to meditate on the great
facts which the day suggests. And
what is true of the Siibbath, com-
monly cullcd llliii-iter. is true in u.
more or lens degree of every Salilmth
Day.
When I was in the United States,
over fifty years ago, I lodged with a
lady who kept twelve boarders. She
worked seven days in the week but
her health gave way and death freed
her from her toll. At another place
the Sabbath dinner was prepared on
Saturday. We had cold roast beef,
rice pudding, bread, butter and plen-
ty of cold writer. The women dressed
themselves after breakfast and went
to church. They were able to rest in
a. way that ministered to their spir-
itual natureland were not worried by
