The two men conceived a strong liking for each other in court. Beecher liked Beach’s personality, and especially his oO atory. Ove of the earlier episotes of the trial was a bitter excoriation of the preacher by the lawyer, in which he was likened to the beiieve contrary, guilty pastor in Hawthorne’s “* Scarlet Letter.” It was a fervent piece o! impassioned speaking, abd D ibody lis*ened to it with intenser attention than Beecher. ‘Turning to Col.
