Experimental and .Demonstration
Work Enlarged.
‘ To the Conservative party belongs
the credit of having inaugurated the
Experimental Farm System ot Can-
ada. The system was instituted under
Sir John Carling ln the Conservative
Administration of Sir John A. Mao-
donald. Before 1890 it was greatly
strengthened- and expanded. Hon.
`.Martin Burrell found the farms in a
more or less rundown state. in many
cases barns and equipment were at a
low ebb and these institutions were
not doing the work for which they
were established-increase the pro-
iductiveness of the farms of Vanada.
Under the vigorous administration it
new lease of life has been established
in various parts of Canada and the
system ot administration has been
thoroughly reorganized in order to
make the whole work of greater val-
ue to the farmers ot Canada, in
every branch of the work the present
Minister has |trlv°n to secure the ter-
vicen of the but trained and most
qualified men, and during the fiscal
year as much money ll being Gxpend-
ed on the Experimental Farm work as
was spent for the whole Departm°nt
of Agriculture for all purposes in the
year before the Bord¢n Government
took office.
Mr. Burrell has had under consider-
ation for some time a further extens-
ion of this work in order that the
farmers of the country may more
fully and directly derive
lieuedts from the various investiga-
tions being carried on at the various
farms. A comprehensive start has rc-
cently been announced in Southern
Saskatchewan and Alberta which sui-
fered so severely front the droutli
last year. With ti view to tlernoiistrat-
ing the immense benefit that can be
tierivcti from proper nietliotls ilie Min-
ister has recently esiablislied all
through those districts twt-.iity to
,thirty illustration stations of easy ac-
cess to the great majority oi’ settlers.
