Granger won the assignment by virtue of his performance as the young romantic in the Gold- wyn production of Enchantment. The title role. however. was not easily filled. Many of Hollyw 's young hopefuls. stars and starle . were tested for the part with little success. The chief obstacle ap- peared to be that the role de- manded a freshness tinged with nsivete that was lacking in many of the aspirants. As a result of his inability to cast Roseanne from among Hollywood professionals. the producer instituted a,nation- wide search.
