et n-nonane Ree TH Care of Animals in Summer. Che American ilumane Society pre- sents the following suggestions relative to the care of animals during the heat ed term. Provide water-—fresh, pure water. Think, . how you are refreshed by a drink of cool water on a hot day Eine | owe. andimals are equally in need of the means of ene thirst. Che active dog requires drink fre quently darlee the a day, as does also the cat; and a dish of fresh water should stand where they can have ac- cess to it. Undoubtedly many a dog is driven ma through lack water; and the testimony is that hydro phobia is almost uakaowa to those lo calities where dogs can drink if they Wish. Every ally, —— and country town should be liberally supplied with drink- ug f eae for animals, and they ; . to iness of should be so constructed that even the smatiest dogs cen drink from them. No gift to a people confers a greater pleasure than a fountain, and that per- son who turns aside a stream from the field and gives a wateriog trough to the roadside, or provides a fountain at which manand beast can drink pure water is truly @ public benefactor. Give the horse frequent opportunity to quench thirst at times when not too much over-heated, aud before eating. lo drink freely after eating prevents a tavorable digestion of food. Provide shade. A Soft Answer. A well-known clergyman tells the following story against himself :—*I was writiog by my study-window, and & little Irish child was basying himself by throwing beans at the window. Losing ail patience, I rushed out of the house determined to frighten the boy. It happened that his mother was com- ing after him atthe same moment, and we met at his side. I stormed at the child, and then, as the mother seemed excessively stupid, | gave her a piece of my mind. Finally, asa grand «nd overwhelming conclusion to my _ scold- ing, Lsaid: “A little discipline now with your children, will save you much pain, if not disgrace, in the faiure. Think of that, madam; that is, if you ever think.” “Think is it?’ .she re- plied. “I think if you’d go back to your bedroom, and wipe the ink aff av your nose, you'd be prettier, even if you dida’t make so much avy a_ sensa- tion.” It was a soft answer; but it bad e effect of turning away wrath. — The Largest Electrie Locomotive, Tbe underground railway for New York is co longer a question of doubt, since the rial lines are not suffi ‘ient, It is probable, however, that electric power will be used On it; and several detailed plans have been made out for the working of such asystem. Amongst these is a ne electric locomoti ve, which has ac calle been constructed by the Rhode Island Lecomotive Works, from the designe of Messrs E. M. Bentley and W.G Kaight. The gauge is that of ordiovry locomotives, six wheels being employed, each of 68 inches. Two electric motors are coupled to- gether and give a joint power of 500,- UG Watts, or nbout 670 horse power. e armatures of the motors are 3 feet liameter, and act directly on the axles without intermediate geariog. The locomotiy s also provided with electric head jiehts, bells and tubular brakes, worked automatically by elee- tricity. The train isto be lighted by incandescent lamps and fitted with electric brakes in each Carriage. o—- A pretty innovation among the georgeous vowns at the latest of Queen Victor'a’s dvawing-rooms was a flight of Butterflies embroidered on one side of the train. The work was 60 exquie- itely done that th pretty creatures seemed aliy aod the woman who wore it did more to put an end to the humminog-bird craze than any army of talkers and writers. c : Opportunity, sooner or later, comes} to all who work and wish, Sines and leave Cape Traverse Monday, Wednesday, eee Round Trip between c ape Traverse and County Line, W ednesday.
