It is not unusual to anticipate the hal- lowed rest, the solemnity, and the plcsumcd goodness of the Sabbath. as James Whitcomb Rlley's “BOY." anticipated the annual good Cheer when he frankly admits that “ies 'fore Christmas, I’m as good as good can be." We begin saying 8004 things on Saturday so that the sanc- tity of the Sabbath may not be too much of a shock to us but, once the hallowed season is over, we return on Monday to the ways of the world. To put it mildly, that is not consistent. We naturally suspect eve of the Sabbath, we exhibit characteristics which by common; th consent. properly belong to the Day? of Rest and devotion. i u The whole year is not too long to le eam the rewards which Christmas brings, nor the whole week too lollgi W to set the mind in readiness for the Sabbath. Spasmodic goodnes is liable to lead to suspicion. To earn the customary good will of Christ- mas, we must begin the day aitrr Christmas, and keep it up till Christ- mas comes round again. Similarly, if we want to be “in the spirit on the Lord's Day we must b;gin oz: Monday morning," and keep It UD during the whole week. Periodical sanctlmoniousness does not consti- tute ideal citizenship any more than does one swallow make a. summer. ieo->_-1 ENCOURAGING. A THE gospel of good health has been preached for many years. and t00 often with few visible results, but continuous preaching and sane thinking are having their effect. Ili was encouraging during the days of the Exhibition to note the interest taken in the Red Cross booth. Men and women crowded around day after day, asking questions. having. their children weighed' and d1scus_,Tc:1cliel's’ Federation, the various sing matters of health with the nurses who cheerfully gave the in_|of which has an interest of its own formation desired' in many infbut combined make a common Pro- stances children were found to be sadly under weight. and in most of these cases it was pointed out that the fault lay in the food given to the children. Mothers admitted that they allowed their children to select for themselves the kind of food they preferred, and often this food was of little use, if not even 5°h°°l5- In this they haw* been injurious. Some very salutary les- sons were given uwug this “ne by stltutes which have taken a keen the nurses' und it is believed that interest in the schools in their re- a better general knowledge regard- mu health and what makes for largely instrumental in improving health now pervades the country. It is a curious fact that the larger proportion of under-nourished chil- dren are to be found in the country rather than in the city. In the country where abundance of eggs, milk and other nourishing foods arc to be had almost for the picking up, these things appear to be less valu- ed than they are in the city, where they are more costly, and often a burden to the poor. It is the old story probably, the things that are most easily obtained are the least valued. 'Ilo`appreciate anything it would appear as lf it must be dearly paid for. The natural foods,-eggs. milk, fresh vegetables and fruit,- lro to be found in abundance throughout the Province, but our country children seem to hunger lffor the sweet meats and the for- eign fnlits to be found in the ltorea. This la -all a matter of edu- W cation. 'I'l1e children can be trained U value the foods that are neces- iry io make them strong and hlalthy ln mind and body. Like many other blessings, this is not realized ,-until health breaks down. and it is the boy who becomes abnormally to good “jes 'fore Christmas." Simi-1 tl larly, we are suspected when. ol1tl.c, o late. This is a human charac- ristic; we walt for tragedies be- fore we make any attempt to pre- vent them. We let matters slide rough carelessness and want of interest, but we are slowly learning nd evcntually we shall learn our sson. Persistent education and training along the necessary lines ill overcome this in time, but we are fearfully slow in placing first things first. The campaign for good henltll has certainly made good progress within the past few years, thanks largely to the Red Cross So- ciety, which is today one of the foremost institutions in the world. __¢,.____ CITY AND COUNTRY. THIS week has been a veritable heart to heart intercourse bc- twcen city and country; a real get- together of the representative men and women of the Province. The co_untry and the city each has its own line of business, but the lines converge and make one commonin- terest in the end. Neither can pros- per without the other. Working to- gether and harmoniously the best interests of the whole Province arc scrvcd. There are a number of in- stitutions which bind city and' country together. The Women’s In-' stitute, the Red Cross Society, the Istoclobreeding associations each one `vincial interest. The Women’s In- stitutes have been welding the so- cial, educational and industrial fab- ric'into a common whole and have been a power for good in the Pro- vlnce. The Teachers’ Federation has done much to raise the status of the teachers and of the country greatly aided by the Women’s In- spective districts, and have'heen school grounds, school buildings and school equipment. The great idea is to get all these institutions working together each in its own way and all for the common aim of making the Province a better place to live in and they are succeeding in their purpose. An impetus has been given to all of these institutions by the Exhibition, which has just come to so successful a close. It is the in- termingling of our people, the get- ting together of our varied inter- ests. the adoption of a common aim that will eventually raise our Pro- vince to a standard not hitherto at- tained, but which undoubtedly lies in the near future. We cannot have too many lettings together. We have everything in common, each branch and institution, autonomous in it- neral throughout the Province , “Such calm weather as there 51 but all working together under q tl “An incident happening last ge week makes it quite clear that the 1y people, that is ‘the nelghbors'don’t do sympathize or co-operate with prohibition enforcement.
