Protect scenuc roads on REJ. The first five scenic roads were designated under the Planning Act as of Nov. 21, 1987. Seven more have receiVed approval in principle from the provincial government, but must also have approval from local author- ities before they can be designated by an order-in-Council. This is ex— pected to occur this winter. Under the sponsorship of the Hon. Gilbert Clements, the Minister of Community and Cultural Affairs, the Planning Act had been amended in 1987 to allow designation of scenic heritage roads. The regulations would pro— hibit cutting or removing of trees, shrubbery or plant life from within the right-of-way or any alteration of the landscape of a scenic road. Two roads were designated in Kings County. One is the portion of the County Line Road commencing at Caledonia and running north for 2.6 kilo- metres. The other is an unnamed road commencing east of New Perth and running south for 3.1 km to meet the Mellish Road. Queen's County has three roads designated. The first is the Millman road running south from Irishtown for 2 km to meet Route 234. The second is the "Y" shaped road known as the Old Town Road from the junction with Route 239 near Millvale running south to Fredericton Station and including the section running west towards South Granville, being about 7.8 km in total distance. The third road is an unnamed one near St. Patrick's running south from Route 239 for 2 km to meet Route 228. The above roads were recommended to the Minister by the Island Nat— ure Trust's Scenic Roads and Trails Committee. Reg Porter of the P.E.I. Museum and Heritage Foundation has conducted a study of all potential roads in Prince County. His report will be received by the Committee for further recommendations to the Minister shortly.
