June 16. (U.P.)-8ome whore in Ireland today there tl probably s. frisky little foal keep- ing very close to its mother's side which will be the Derby hero of 1934. Ireland's green pastures, with a mild climate is noted ea a breeding ground for thomughbreds and s big percentage of Derby winners were born there. Our little friend will be consider- ed s year old on the first ot Jan- uary next. He will continue to grow and disport himself in his home - paddock, maybe till the big‘ Dub- lin sales in August, 1932, where he may be sold to some wealthy owner for $25,000 or perhaps $50,- 000. He now assumes an import- ant role. Critics will discuss his future in terms o1 winning races. He probably wont even have a name o! his own, but will be rs- Ierred to as a colt by ao-and-ao (his sire) by so-and-so ,(his dam.) I Shortly afterwards, not later than November, 1932, he must be entered for the Derby of 1034. The owner supplies the date of birth, name of sire and dam, sex, and color, and our one-year-old becomes a Derby contender. Likewise three or four hundred others. The following year, 1938. our youngster emerges as a full-blown two-year-old race horse. He can still keep his parents’ name, but be from Atlant; to sell real estate for the corporation that owned Whit- field Estates and in his spare time paired with Armour in a series of matches with visiting golfers. The combination of Jones and Armour was not beaten all winter. Armouris first victory as a. pro came that same winter when he won the Flori d.‘ West Coast open. In 1927 Tommy leaped into national prominence by tieing Harry Cooper in the national open and going on to defeat Cooper in the play-off. A few weeks later he won the Canadian open. Johnny Farrell took the open crown from Tommy in 1928, but the Scot gained some measure of revenge by whipping Farrell in the Metropolitan open a bit later. In 1930 Armour, at the top of his game, took the B. G. A. title and the Canadian open, out-distancing strong fields in both events.
