He also said: 1. Talks have been launched by scientists at the Chalk River, Oot.. atomic project. and the pulp and paper industry on the possibility of a dual-purpose atomic power' plant. producing botb electricity and steam. 2. A Canadian plant will be in operation late in 1957 producing uranium metal in Canada for the first time. 8. Total dollar value of uranium ya duced by government mines and purchased by'Eldorado Min- ing and Refining Ll.d.. from private companies with special price con- tracts likely will exceed 31.250.000.- 000 by March 81. 1962. Mr. Bennett said talks between Atomic Energy of Canada. a crown company. and the defence depart- ment have been undertaken "wlth a view to determine whether the department has a requirement for small package power reactors in the north." If this study showed that such power plants could perform a use- ful service In the north. an atomic- defence team would be set up to prepare an outline specification for a project suitable for northern use. SUITABLE FOR CIVILIANS "Discussions are in progress." he said. "It was felt that the (de- fence) department mlglit have a need for such a plant. Anything developed for the defence depart-. Consider Sgmall A-Power "- Plants For The Norfhland ment would be suitable for civil- in use.” . Possibility of a dual - purpose atomic plant for the pulp and pg- per industry was discussed at a re- cent conference at Chalk River. No decision was made to proceed with such a project but there was general agreement there was need for a "feasibility study” to deter- mine whether the industry needs 'such a reactor. Mr. Bennst. also president of El- dorado, said this company now has decided to build a uranium metal producing plant at its refinery at Port Hope, Ont. Canada now buys a uranium metal from the United States. Completion of the plant would mean that Canada's atomic power program would be self-contained as regards its fuel supply. How- ever. he said Canada has no plans at present to manufacture heavy water in this country. SUMMERSIDE UNITED AFTERNOON W.M.S.
