The Canadian cruiser Stanley appear- | ed about midnight, and the seines were not. brought abvard till morning. The Hannon was suspected by the Stanley, and was spoken by the cruiser when entering Bay Chaieur. The boats of the Gloucesterman were then a little distance away fishing mackerel, and escaped the eyes of the cf- ficers of the cruiser. The nets were sunk by the tishermen, and when the cruiser ap- proached the men were only rowing about. Next day preparations were made by the men to go on @ trip, and soon the Yankee, before a smart nor’ west breeze, showed her heels to the Stanley. A chase was made, but the seiner soon had eight miles of clear water tu the good, and was going at race- horse speed. The men now in the city, at the time the chase began, were ashore de- liveriung mess mackerel to an old woman who assisted them in mending their nets, and though they waited several days, their vessel did not re-appear. They walked to Campellton, a distance of about 100 miles, whence the U. 5S. consular agent forwarded them to this city. The Hannon had about 200 barrels of mackrel on board when chas- ed. Macay, the young Montreal officer of the Royal En- | gineers, has been sent to Africa, is attract- ing a great deal of attention in military circles in England. Lieut. Hooper, of the Montveal field battery, who was a brother cadet of Capt. Mackay’s at the Royal Mili- tary College, Kingston, has just returned from England, and says that by reason of this »ppointment Capt. Mackay is one of the m st pepular men in the service. Mr. Hooper, with » number of brother officers, saw Mackay off for the Dark Continent, and all the young officers expressed disap- pulut:ventat net being able to accompany _the Canadian. Mackay was in good spirits ‘and looked jorward with apparent pleasure ‘to the three years he expected to be in Africa surveying the boundaries between ithe British and Portuguese and German, ‘territories. In view of the unsettled feel- ‘jug at the time of Mackay’s departure, open hostilities by the German and Portuguese colonial officials were expected, and Mac- kay was authorized io raise a force of 20,000 bieck. to assist him aud protect the expe- ditor, if necesssry.
