It } is true of course that the mercury some- ; times freezes, and that the glass sometimes | stands at 60° below, butthat is rarely. Twenty degrees be low isthe rule and it seldom drops to40° below, I have talk- ed with numbers of men who said that they never missed a day last winter on account of the cold. The winter here is all right. A man has to be here some time asa rule before he strikes what he came for, Those who reo across it in # hurry are the exception. But we are in the place where fortunes are made and where men are lmmaking them every day, elmost, Of ;course, on the other band, ‘here are many disgusted persons who have prospected a great deal and without any return worth mentioning, whilst hundreds of others have lft the country disheartened. There is yet plenty of country, however, to pros- pect. Gold has beea found here in the most ualikely places. The creeks are not—as I supposed before 1 came—the only places where one fiads it, in fact ‘he richest claims are located on the side of a | steep hill. Benches and hillside claims jare just as likely to beas rich as the creeks, because it is now an admitted fact that allthe gold in the creeks slide into them from the neighboring hill-ides. i Itie generally supposed that this country was at one time perfectly |-vel, with per- haps @ tropical cl’mate, and that in pro- cess of time there were volcanic eruptions sccom panied of covrse by great heat, which melted the quirz, By the force of the eruptions the placer gold wasthrown out. This gold belt, or at Jeast a large part of it, must have been traversed by a great river, for wash gravel can be got noi only in the beds of rivers but on the beriches, hilleider, and even on the top of the mountains. Fresh eruptions, perhaps lorg eubsequent, broke up the surface of the country, aod the waters in finding new channels, washei some of the gold into the valleys, some caught on benches, and some remained on the hillsides; so one is liable to find it almost anywhere, that is ip any place where gravel is found. If there is no gravel, digging is rather a hopeless busi- nese, and then toc, most people want to tind colour, although some of the best finds were made where nocolour was observed unt:] bed rock wes struck. There is no rule to follow and the experience of the old miners is of no earthly use here. I sometimes think we miss: d it by going up the Stewart R ver Jast summer. Among agreat many others we heard on the out- tile that everthing in the Klondike cis- trict was pegged off and that there was no use to go there. This was one of the biggest lies of the many thousands which we listened to and beiieved. Why,thezre were more claims resorded in this Klons dike “district during the past summer than had beea taken previously. Oaly creek cla'm: were being recorded before. About April la+t the first bench or hillside Claim was recorded in thecountry one on French Hill which has the richeet ground yet found. district has been staked. Stakes every— where, one could’nt tell what was record- ed and what was pot. Oftentimes some poor hard-working fellow shouldered his pick, tramped upa creek to some point where there were no stakes, prospected and struck gold and hestened to Dawson to record his claim only to be told that it had been already recorded. But it wae’nt. In the mesotime the claim would be recorded in the name of some hanger. on in consideration of a halfinterest or a three-quarter interest, or whatever it might be, for thebenefit of some one of the efficials in the office cr for the officials as body.
