Dear Wendell tend Myrtle: Through the medium of the gathering this evening and small gift. the members and friends of the Northglitver Baptist Church wish to express to you. their appreciation of your friend- ship, and your fine spirit of co- operation in promoting the work of the church. and assisting in the activities of the community. To you, Wendell. .on behalf of the Sun- day School. we convey our thanks for your faithfulness as a teacher and officer. We know that you will have no regrets because of the time you have spent in teaching our boys and girls the great truths and abiding values of God's Holy Word. The boys and girls will hold .in their minds fond memories oi their time spent with you in Sun- day School. nor because of what you said. but rather because of what you are and what you rep- resent-an interpreter to them of God's Holy Word. It is with reluctance that we give you another community and the fellowship of another church, and with regret that we see you go from our midst. Our reluctance and regret. however. change to a moment of Joy in the light of the knowledge of the part that you will, both of you, continue, wliereever you may be. to make e contribu- tion to the life of the community and more especially to share with others of like mind in the labors of God's Vineyard. V Our prayers go with you and we ask God's blessing upon you and you family in your new homo and new work. Yours Sincerely. The members and friends of the North Rustico Baptist Church. What does exist, is a world vitiated, greed. lust. sloth. and all the other ob- stacles to Christian love. These hindrances pervade the world In which the Christian must live. and he himself is far from being uncontaminated by them- Consider a Christian who enters the ranks of labor. if he finds injustice there. he knows that it is his duty to combat it by the methods which have been author- ized legally to combat this in- justice. If he is a leader, then his will be the responsibility to g determine the proper means to restore justice to its rightful place. Surely the struggles and sufferings often involved in a just strike. are not the signs of tlmidity and indolence. Yet they are an integral part of the lifel of s Christian-A Christian who "hungers and thirsts after lii5' tice." STRUGGLE DEMANDED Again. onsider a Christian who enters the world of P0iitiC5- Here is a field where he will en- counter unscrupulously. hypoc- risy. and greed. Surely the ef- forts which he must expend. and the oppositions he must endure. in the cause of justice, within his own nation. or in relations with other nations. are not those of a slave. Yet these struggles are his, and are demanded of him. by the very fact that he is a Christian. It was of ardent and self-ssc- rificing love that Our Lord spoke when He said: "I am come to cast fire upon the earth. and whiff will I.xbut that it be enklndled? it was to the struggles which life in this world requires of love. that these forceful and paradoxi- cal words of His refer: ''If any man come to Me. and hate not his father. and mother. and wife. and children. and brethrcn. and sisters. yea and his own life also. he cannot be My disclpif-" Of course. if we wish to look d "pie in the sky." an imaginary goal set up by Christians to re- place solid material goais which they are too timid, or feel unablei to reach. ' Moreover, they claim that be-I lie! in this imaginary goal hssl been encouraged in the masses by those who do have great ma- terial posscssions (the capital- ists). so that the masses will be oonten with their material In- digence. The doctrine of Our Lord, then, is a doctrine for slaves. who will, because of its assurances. feel themselves ex- onerated from entering into the struggles of life. Such a conception of Christian life could not be further from the truth. At best. it is a caricature. For us to live as Christ has taught us to live, necessarily in- volves a struggle, and often a great one. Of course, the struggle and en- durance of suffering required of us is not for its own sake. it is based upon the only motive worth justifying any activity- nemely. love. Love of God. and love of neighbor for the sake of God. are the fires which must burn in the Christian heart; the more intensely these fires burn. the more srdor and energy will pour into the Christian”: activit- ies. Many of thc ends with which "the world" in its blindness is satisfied. will not satisfy a true Christian. However. this does not mean that his struggle on behalf of God, and for the sake of his uelghbo will be any the less strenuous. BATTLE OF LIFE It is the vocation of the or- dinary Christlan to enter into the battle of life. and to do his ut-.' most. within the bounds of the career which he has chosen. to wage unrelenting war against those elements which threaten model our lives as Christians. history abounds with noble and holy have stood the test of time. from these we can learn much.
